Did you ask for some book recs? No, probably not, but that’s not the point I’m trying to make. I wanted to do a sort of Monthly Recommendation feature because who isn’t looking for more books to read (even if we already have 1000 books on our TBR and, like, 10 ARCs to read, but WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THAT)? And this month’s theme is recommending lesser known books/series that are similar to some super popular YA books/series we’ve probably already read (or tried to read).
Feel free to click on the links below the pictures of the suggested books if they interest you to learn more about them from Goodreads!
…if you like BAMF as female characters.
…if you like assassins.
You want some more female badassery and assassins in a fantasy world? Meet Yelena and Ismae! I haven’t read either of these books, to be honest, but I’ve heard fantastic things about both, and who doesn’t want more kick-ass leading ladies in YA fiction?
…if you like the Beauty and the Beast/hate-to-love romance.
…if you like the more mature YA fantasy with the magic and the sex (what, you can like both).
You want some more push-and-pull romance set in a rich world with magic? Look no further than these two. Cruel Beauty is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, while Uprooted is told as if it’s a fairy tale (and has some ~steamy scenes~, I’ve heard). Again, I haven’t read either, but I’ve heard pretty positive things.
(Look at how certified I am.)
…if you like a YA dystopian novel that actually makes you think.
You want a YA dystopian novel that actually explores a terrifying world and instead of being a cliche? These two are some of my favorite dystopians ever. Unwind explores a world in which pro-life and pro-choice advocates have decided that the solution is to send their kids off to be unwound, a process where people take apart their bodies and give their parts to someone else who needs them. The Program takes place in a world where suicide has gotten out of control, and the government will take you away if you become depressed and take away your memories. Read them and weep (literally).
…if you like a diverse gang of anti-heroes and heists.
…if you want a mature YA/Adult fantasy with assholes as main characters.
You want to read a fantasy book about a gang of anti-heroes or villains? Both of these books have anti-heroes/villains in the main role in their books. I’ve only read The Young Elites (and I love it), but I’ve heard good things about Prince of Thorns (I will say that if you’re sensitive to violence and rape, that you probably shouldn’t read it, since this is a bit heavier)!
…if you like romance and interweaving sci-fi stories in space.
You want a YA sci-fi series with gorgeous covers, awesome main ladies, and a different story in each book that ends up coming together in the end? Here we have the Starbound trilogy, which is one that I haven’t finished yet (oops), but the first book was brilliant, and I don’t doubt that the sequels will be just as terrific.
…if you like the romance and the fluff with angels.
…if you like the grey area the Shadowhunters vs Downworlders conflict exposes and like dystopian and forbidden romance.
…if you want a read-alike.
You want a YA PNR/fantasy series surrounding angels and/or various magical creatures?Unearthly and Angelfall are two of my favorite trilogies dealing with angels (which are one of my favorite PNR creatures), and The Girl at Midnight has literally been pitched as the next Mortal Instruments, so, that’s a pretty easy target.
…if you like a fluffier, less serious dystopian with some pretty okay plot twists, an addictive quality, and a smart main character.
You want a lighter YA dystopian with a realistic female lead and no love triangle? The Testing is definitely for you! I know that I said this was one of my least favorite series, but all bookworms don’t share the same opinion, so I know that this might become a favorite series for some!
…if you like magic schools and a magical fantasy world.
You want a complex YA fantasy series with a magic school? Here’s the Seven Realms series! I actually thought the first book was meh, but I’ve heard that the next three books are better, PLUS, there’s a magic school in Book 2, and I love magical schools. They’re one of my weaknesses. I will say, this is heavier and deals with court stuff, like kings and queens, but there’s thieves! And Han (who’s always a plus)!
The Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy
You want a complex, creative, weird YA PNR series with chaos and beautiful writing and an awesome author to boot? You may have heard of a little series called Daughter of Smoke and Bone. It deals with angels and demons and a main character with blue hair and everything is weird, and you might not know what the heck is going on about 90% of the time, but that’s what makes it so great!

…if you like a quirky cast of characters.
…if you like the character development and/or the weird situations Green’s characters get caught up in.
…if you like the dark humor/being sad in general.
You want a YA contemporary with great characters, weird premises, and a little bit of dark humor? Before I Fall and Falling into Place are some of my favorite contemporary reads, and I’ve yet to read It’s Kind of a Funny Story (SHAME), but, again, I’ve heard fantastic things about it.
…if you like a main character who’s not what she seems.
…if you like a story that keeps you on the edge of your toes.
…if you like a mature YA thriller/horror with a smart main character.
You want a twisty YA thriller that isn’t cliche or juvenile? Here are three of my favorite YA thrillers who have fantastic premises and deliver them and don’t treat its readers like kids that need to be told every little thing. Go on, be thrilled!
And that’s it for the first ever edition of “If You Like This…You’ll Like This”! I hope you enjoyed it, especially since I worked so hard on it, and it took a while for me to think up some good recommendations.
Have you read any of these books? What do you think about my choices? Are there any books you’ve read that are similar to these super popular YA series/books?
I love this post!

Yeah, I read about it via Goodreads reviews! 😂 I think it’s a mix between a mature YA/adult fantasy stand-alone, and I want to read it when I’m in the mood for it!

Woah, I had no idea that The Program was about suicide and depression! Totally adding that to the top of my TBR!
Btw, your recs for people who like John Green are spot on – I really dig It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Before I Fall, and Falling Into Place (the last one is my fave of the 3 for sure).
Thanks for sharing these!

It is! It’s actually a very interesting future, and I thought the book handled the concept well! I have yet to read the sequels yet, but they all sound awesome.
I still have to read It’s Kind of a Funny Story, but I loved Before I Fall and Falling into Place! They were both so good! ❤
No problem! 😄

Grave Mercy and This is Our Story are totally underrated, but they are just fantastic. This was such a very cool post, and I’m so going to have to try out some of your suggestions! Great post! 🙂

Haven’t read Grave Mercy yet, so I can’t say if it’s good, but I wholeheartedly agree about This Is Our Story! It’s one of the better YA thrillers I’ve read. Thank you so much; I hope my recs don’t suck! 😂

Omg, this is an AMAZING post!!! And The Young Elites is SO good! The Rose Society made me not like it so much (because I thought Adelina got too dark–and I like that stuff!) but The Midnight Star was JUST SO AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL AND HEARTWRENCHING that TYE is now a favorite series. And am I the only one who really didn’t like Cruel Beauty??? XD And OH, I read Scythe last month and have been meaning to read the rest of Neal Shusterman’s books! And aagghhh I need to read Dangerous Girls so baaaaad. I loved this post, Mikaela! Thanks for adding more books to my TBR… -_- XD

Haha, The Rose Society is actually my favorite so far; I thought it was brilliant. I still have The Midnight Star sitting on my TBR, but I want to finish out the series this year! I haven’t read Cruel Beauty yet, so I don’t know? 😂 Still sitting on my TBR; and I want to eventually read it. The Unwind dystology is so good; YOU MUST READ IT! And you must, Dangerous Girls was a fantastic thriller! And you’re welcome! 😂

I love this idea for a feature Mikaela, and I’m always looking for recommendations so I’d love to see more of these from you as well! 😀
I am a massive fan of the Throne of Glass series and while I have read the Poison Study books I haven’t picked up Grave Mercy so I may add that book to my to-read list. Also I love Six of Crows and while I own the whole of The Young Elites series I haven’t got around to picking it up yet, your post has just given me the motivation I need yo convince me to move that series up my to-read list and get started on it soon. 🙂
Again these are some amazing books Mikaela, and I really hope you post another of these soon. I’ll be keeping an eye out for another either way! 😀 ❤

Yeah, that’s great! ❤ A lot of people seemed to like it, so I’m definitely continuing this every month; I have a lot of fun topics planned!
I haven’t picked up either; both are on my TBR, but I’m hoping to read Poison Study soon enough! And, yes, YOU MUST READ THE YOUNG ELITES! It’s brilliant; I still need to read The Midnight Star!
And, unfortunately, the next one isn’t until next month, but I’m super excited for it since it’s recommending books based off popular TV shows! 😄

That’s great to hear, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on your blog for the next post in this feature, and then the next and the next! 😀 The Poison Study series is an all-time favourite of mine so I really hope you enjoy it. And hopefully I’ll be able to get around to The Young Elites very soon as well! 😀
Ohh, I’m even more intrigued now. There are a fair few TV shows I love so I’m looking forwards to book recommendations I can pick up. 🙂 ❤

Great post, Mikaela! 😀 I’ve read and loved both Six of Crows and The Young Elites, Cinder and The Starbound Trilogy, The Mortal Instrument and Unearthly and Angelfall. I think Unearthly and Angelfall are the books that restored my faith in angel/paranormal fantasy after the disaster that is Hush Hush and Fallen (I hope you don’t like them if you do then no offense hahaha 😂). Also I have to read Grave Mercy and Poison’s Study, heard a lot of great things about them ❤

Yes, same. And, no, I decided to not read either of those series because of Goodreads reviews, so no offense taken. 😂 Unearthly and Angelfall are still probably my favorite books about angels; I don’t think there’s too many good ones. And, yes, same, so I obviously should read them soon! 😂

Thank God, don’t even bother hahaha I really want to unhaul my copy of those books though 😂 exactly, most angel books fall into the same trap, I guess. Bad guy who is secretly fallen angel, innocent girl, forbidden love, etc etc hahaha

Omg I am just thinking about how long this post would have taken you to write XD But great post and great list! I have read the Starbound books, but I hated the first one, though I gave the next two 4 stars. AND POISON STUDY IS SO AMAZING READ ITTTT. (this series has a lot of books…. so umm…. prepare to be overwhelmed XD) And I haven’t read a Marie Lu book. Whoooops. Those dystopians sound so cool, specially Unwind. Sounds really bloody. I am in. XD

It did take me long to write; these take about an hour to do, and I can’t even. 😂 Thank you so much! I’ve only read the first one, but I actually adored it! Poison Study has so many books and spin-offs; I need to read it soon. Marie Lu is fantastic; you’ll love her! Unwind, unfortunately, isn’t bloody, but it’s definitely creepy.

I love this new feature of yours…was it fun to write?
Also everywhere I go I see people talking about Six of Crows and the Seven Realms Series, I guess I really need to read them!

Thank you! And, yeah, definitely! I mean, I’ve already typed up two others, and all three took a good hour of my time to do, but it’s worth it because I really like recommending things. 😂
HOW HAVE YOU NOT READ SIX OF CROWS WHAT??? Get on that immediately. 😂

Ohhh I’ve read SO MANY OF THESE!! I feel really proud of me. 😂 And I think it’s awesome when underrated series get the attention they deserve!! I looove the Demon King series but like no one seems to have read it!?? It’s such a shame. IT’S EXCELLENT.

I feel the exact same way! I actually really need to continue on with that one! I intended on binging the series, but I only got through the first book, unfortunately. 😂
