For every bookworm out there, we all have our auto-buy authors. You know, those authors where if you see their name on any book – literally ANY BOOK – you will immediately put it on your TBR and give up anything to get that book. Yeah, those authors.
I know I’ve talked a lot about some of my favorites in some of my posts in February, but I realized that I left out a list of some of my all-time favorite authors, so I decided to write one up for today! Without further ado, here they are.
Sarah J. Maas
I’m pretty sure this one is obvious to anyone who has been on my blog for a couple of minutes, but I absolutely love this woman. So many people seem to hate her and her books, but I’m just a huge fan. Both her Throne of Glass series and the ACOTAR trilogy feature amazing characters, steamy romances, and fantastic, intriguing plots. Every time I read her books, it instantly makes my day better.
Rick Riordan
This is the first of many authors on this list that I’m sure everyone agrees with, but I love him so much. I’ve been reading all his books since I picked up The Lightning Thief in the fifth grade, and I haven’t regretted it since. His books always make me laugh, and I absolutely love his cast of characters and how three dimensional and realistic they all are. I will always be excited for a new book of his.
V.E. Schwab
I LOVE THIS WOMAN SO MUCH. After hearing all the hype about her on Goodreads, I finally caved and read Vicious, and fell in love with it (it’s still my favorite of hers). I read A Darker Shade of Magic, and wasn’t too impressed, but fell in love with the series after A Gathering of Shadows. And then I finally read This Savage Song, and I swear to God, this woman is utterly brilliant. She can write any story idea perfectly.
John Green
So many people seem to have personal vendettas against him and think all his books are the same thing, but I love all of his books (okay, except An Abundance of Katherines. That was pretty bad.), especially Looking for Alaska, which is still one of my all-time favorite stand-alones. I just always love how his books seem to deal with the weirdest situations, but also deal with serious topics and strange characters I can relate to, and then proceed to stomp on my heart. Like, a lot.
Gillian Flynn
Otherwise known as the Queen of Thrillers. If you’re a thriller fan and haven’t read any of her books, YOU MUST. I just love how wonderfully dark her books can get and how evil the women are and how twisted all the characters are and just everything about her books is brilliant. Even Dark Places, my least favorite of hers, is still pretty freaking good. I anxiously await her next book (it’s been four years, guys).
Cassandra Clare
Again, another controversial writer, but I have a lot of unpopular opinions, so who cares? I absolutely love everything that comes out of the Shadowhunter world, and this was probably one of the first series where I became an official fangirl for shipping and things. I’m literally excited for all the Shadowhunter things, and no one can make me feel bad for feeling that way.
Neal Shusterman
Probably another one you guys aren’t too surprised to see. I’ve talked so much about how much I love the Unwind Dystology and how every single person on this planet should read it. I read Scythe as well, and though I didn’t love it as much as Unwind, really nothing can compare, and I still thought it was really good! Also, I still need to read the rest of his books. #shame
Maggie Stiefvater
Duh. Her writing is absolutely magical, her characters are amazing, she’s so sweet and funny on all her social media, her ideas are weird and wonderful, and just everything about her is perfection. Again, I still need to read the rest of her books because I’m always that person who’s late to the fandom.
J.K. Rowling
Again, this one is fairly obvious, and I’m sure literally everyone has read and loved her books, so I’m not going to bother to needlessly add my adoration for the Harry Potter series.
Marie Lu
I feel like she’s so underrated??? I absolutely loved the Legend trilogy and found it had more depth and intricacy than most The Hunger Games-ripoffs around that time. Plus, The Young Elites trilogy is absolutely perfection, and if you haven’t read it yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE PICK IT UP RIGHT NOW.
Pierce Brown
Not only is he extremely attractive (because he is, like, seriously), but his books are brilliant. If you haven’t had the chance to read the Red Rising trilogy, you must. You absolutely must. Fantastic world-building, great characters, Darrow is the best book boyfriend ever, and it’s a complex read for those who prefer their YA a bit more challenging. And, yes, I cannot wait for Iron Gold.
Marissa Meyer
As you guys probably know at this point, I’m a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles. I love the kick-ass characters, I love the friendships and romances between the characters, I love the complex plot, and I love the world-building. Basically, this series is fantastic. And it’s a huge shame I still haven’t read Heartless yet.
Nick Cutter
Honestly, I don’t think I talk about this guy as much. Yeah, I’ve only read one book of his, but I WILL BUY ANY BOOK HIS NAME IS ATTACHED TO. The Troop is a brilliant horror novel that is disgusting and horrific and all kinds of wonderful. I have The Deep and Little Heaven on my TBR, and I can’t wait to dive into them both.
Adam Silvera
This is the man I go to when I want to be completely and utterly destroyed by emotions. I read More Happy Than Not in one day because it was oh-so-brilliant and emotional, and then I read History Is All You Left Me in one day because it was brilliant and emotional and wonderful. You bet I’ll be clamoring for They Both Die At the End.
Laini Taylor
She writes magical stories about magical people, and that’s pretty much, like, my favorite thing. Also, her writing is absolutely perfect and enchanting and wonderful, not to mention she also writes quite complex YA fantasy that’s heavy on politics, which is always my favorite kind of YA fantasy.
And that’s it for most of my favorite/auto-buy authors! I hope you really enjoyed this post; it took me so long to write because I kept putting it off for some strange reason.
Who are some of your favorite authors? Do we share any of the same ones?
Totally agree on a lot of these! Maggie Stiefvater (duh), Rick Riordan and Gillian Flynn of course! And I think most people will agree on J.K.Rowling… Great post 🙂

Yes, to all three of those! Still waiting for more Gillian Flynn over here; I’d just die if she announced a new novel. Oh, yes, definitely; I’m sure they would! Thank you! ❤

Those are some seriously good authors you have on your list! And I agree with quite a few of them!
I think the ONLY authors I would buy anything by are Sarah J. Maas and Cassandra Clare! I mean, I really enjoy Maggie’s writing, I loved the Legend trilogy and everything Marissa Meyer has released so far, but I don’t find myself rushing to pick up anything new by them – even though, I might do for Marissa Meyer.
With Victoria Schwab, I haven’t quite decided where she fits yet, as I’ve only read her Shades Of Magic trilogy and I definitely need to read more before I decided if I’m going to get all of her previous books and whatever she releases next!
Also, YES to Pierce’s ridiculously good looks! I swear that’s how I initially heard of him! And I still haven’t gotten around to reading Red Rising.. even though I own the book by now! Hopefully soon.

Oh, yeah, I think SJM and CC are probably my tops! Especially SJM. Literally will buy anything of hers. 😂
I still need to read a couple more books of Schwab’s some I’ve only read her more recent books, but they’re all so good, in pretty sure her older ones will be amazing as well!
Yes, he’s so pretty! And he’s really funny and nice as well. I want to meet him, but I feel like I’d blurt out something stupid and tell him I think he’s hot by accident. 😂

YES MARIE LU. Although, for the most part, I haven’t really read the other authors? hahah I’ve read a book here and there or a portion of the series, but I haven’t read all of their books. BUT MARIE LU. I love her!

YES I LOVE HER. Cannot wait for Warcross to come out! Lol, I haven’t read all these authors books either. If I’m remembering my list correctly, I think Pierce Brown is the only one; the others still have one or two on the TBR! You must read all the authors, Molly!

I completely agree with most of these, and the others are because I haven’t read them yet! I’m desperate to read some VE Schwab, and Legend and Red Rising have been on my radar for years!

Ah, yes, you need to read all three of those authors! They’re absolutely brilliant and fantastic and their books are A++. 😄

I have to confess there are a heck of a lot of authors on your list whose books I’ve never read (although I do own quite a few). I really need to get reading some of them

Lol, same. The amount of times I’ve read a blogger’s list, and I’m just like, “Literally all of these are on my TBR.” 😂 Obviously, I highly recommend them!

Woah, you have a tonne of auto-buy authors! Marissa Meyer, Rick Riordan, Brandon Sanderson and Becky Albertalli are mine!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I still haven’t read a Brandon Sanderson novel ugh! 🙈 I do love Becky Albertalli, but I feel like I need to read at least two books by an author before they become an auto-buy. Maybe that’s just me and my weird rules. 😂

I love the “auto buy” authors idea! Hmmm I’d have to think of mine, but I love that you have so many!! JK Rowling is a given. She was definitely a catalyst for reading in my younger years! Great list 🙂

Oh, gosh, I feel like I have too many, especially since I’m 100% broke. 😂 Though I do borrow through Overdrive, so that’s pretty nice. And, yes, I read HP in middle school because I wasn’t even born when she first published the Sorceror’s Stone, but it was definitely worth it. I loved binging them. 😄 Thank you!

YAS TO MARIE LU. My top fav authors are Rick Riordan, JK Rowling, Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Marissa Meyer, and Maggie Stiefvater. We have a lot in common! XD

*But VE Schwab is climbing closer to being a fav too! I read ADSOM and am waiting for AGOS, and I also read The Archived and The Unbound, and they were all really good!

Yes, all the Marie Lu love! I literally cannot wait for Warcross; the cover is stunning. 😍 And, yes, to having a lot of authors in common; I approve! 😄

Omg yes! I read the first chapter excerpt thing and I need MORE! The Midnight Star absolutely tore out my heart — it’s one of the four books I’ve ever cried over. XD

Hmmm, you and I have had similar enough tastes in your recent posts that I definitely need to check out some of the authors on this list that I haven’t read yet! 🙂 Maas, Schwab, and Meyer are definitely all on my equivalent of this list. Taylor SHOULD be (but for whatever reason I have procrastinated the crap out of finishing the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series even though I LOVED the first one). Shusterman, Lu, and Brown are all pretty near the top of my TBR 😀

Ooh, yes, do so! I obviously highly recommend all of them! 😂 AND SAME! When I first read the weird, I didn’t even finish the third one because I was too lazy to finish out 50 more pages, so I’ve been re-reading the series. I’ve been totally failing at it though. And, yes, I highly recommend all their books; and I pray you enjoy them! 😄

This is an amazing list Mikaela, and quite a few of these are my all-time favourite authors as well. V.E. Schwab, Marissa Meyer, Sarah J Maas and Laini Taylor are at the very top of the list, and despite only have read his first series so is Rick Riordan! I haven’t read any of his books yet but I really want to get started on some of Neal Shusterman’s works soon, and I’ve only just re-started City of Bones by Cassandra Clare but I reckon she’ll be an author on my all-time favourite list soon as well! 😀 ❤

Yes, Rick Riordan has a lot of great series! So far, I’ve only finished PJO; still need to finish out HOO, and I haven’t started his other two series. I’m so behind. 😂 Neal Shusterman’s books are A+, so I really hope you enjoy them! I re-read TMI last year and actually liked it even more than when I first read it in middle school, which was a surprise; I honestly thought I’d hate it. 😂 I hope you love her books, even though you’ll have a lot of catching up to do.

Yeah I need to start and finish HOO, hopefully I’ll be able to get around to it sometime this year (then again I said that last year and didn’t manage it so you never know?)
I hope so too, I plan to start Scythe first.
Ohh that’s good to hear. I’m enjoying the first book so far but at the moment it’s missing something that makes books outstanding, you know?

Pssh, I said I’d finish it last year…and that didn’t happen. I only have Blood of Olympus left, but it’s been so long and I’ve also been spoiled and just ugh.
I think the third is probably my favorite of the series! I didn’t like the last three and thought they were pointless, imo, but you might think differently? I thought the Infernal Devices was A+ (still need to read Clockwork Princess) and thought Lady Midnight was good too!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Well you’re further ahead than me. I still need to start the first one! Oh no I can’t believe you’ve been spoiled. I always hate it when that happens and I can totally understand why you have carried on with it yet.
Everyone thinks that about The Infernal Devices and Lady Midnight so I’m so excited to get around to both. I’ll be stating City of Ashes tomorrow so we’ll see if that one’s a little better! 😀

You’re further ahead than me, and oh being spoiled must suck. I always hate it when that happens for me with books so I can definitely see where you’re coming from there and why you haven’t finished the series yet.
I’ve heard plenty of people say that about The Infernal Devices and Lady Midnight so I can’t wait to get around to both. I’ll be starting City of Ashes tomorrow so I’ll have to see what I think of that one again. 🙂

I love this list, Mikaela! We share several all-time favorite/auto-buy authors – Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare, V.E. Schwab (which is a new one for me but seriously after one book I officially need to read all of her others and whatever else she writes), John Green (I’ve been wishing for a new book by him), and then Laini Taylor. Most of the others on your list are authors whose books I need to read ASAP, especially Red Rising because I’ve heard a lot of great things about that book. Leigh Bardugo and Samantha Shannon are two of my other all-time favorites because I can never get enough of their writing, characters, and world-building. 😁

Yes, same with Scwab! She was just one of those authors where I read one book of hers and I was like, “Yes. I need more.” SJM was also like that; I was hooked from TOG. I wish John Green released another book, but I know it’s so hard to come out with another book when TFIOS did so well (he’s actually talked about it in a YouTube video, I think). Yes, you must read Red Rising; I think you’ll love it! 😄 I would’ve added Leigh Bardugo, but I’ve only read one book of hers that I’ve liked (I didn’t like the Grisha trilogy, and I haven’t read Crooked Kingdom yet 🙈), but she’s pretty great as well!
LikeLiked by 1 person
True, it has to be hard to find a way to top TFIOS. I could have sworn that once I saw somewhere that he was working on a new book but that was a few years back.
I will definitely be trying to get around to Red Rising this year. And you should so read CK if you liked Six of Crows. It’s a great conclusion. 😊

So many of these authors are great! I hadn’t heard of Gillian Flynn, but now I’m probably going to search her for the next two hours. If she writes thrillers than I’m sure I’ll end up loving her books.

You’ve never heard of Gillian Flynn??? I’m shocked; Gone Girl is pretty much the most widely recommended thriller of ever. Her books are fantastic; she was one of the authors that made me fall in love with thrillers in the first place!

After reading this post I added Gone Girl to my amazon wishlist! I’m definitely going to bump it up to being my next buy. Have you read any of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s books? She’s one of my auto-buy authors.

No, I haven’t! She writes more romance-y stuff, and I don’t really like that, but everyone’s always raving about her books!

I loved her Dark Elements triology and Lux series! They do have quite a lot of romance, but I think her ideas are so unique and well thought out!

I love love LOVE Rick Riordan. His books are so fun and hilarious. I actually laugh out loud reading them. And his characters are so great, and Annabeth and Percy are still one of my favorite ships. And Marie Lu is SO underrated, but I think she;s amazing. Everything she writes is so emotional. Like…can she not rip out my heart in each book?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, Percabeth is a classic ship of mine. I love those two, and all those moments they have are just simply adorable. I absolutely love it. His books are hilarious; one of the reasons I picked them up was because of the chapter titles. 😂 She is underrated! Her books are utterly fantastic and give me all the feels; I really can’t wait to read Midnight Star.

So many good authors on your list. I haven’t read V.E. Scwab or Sarah H Maas yet. Marie Lu is one of my top auto-buy (already pre-ordered Warcross). My other one is Kevin Hearne. He’s written the Iron Druid series which I adore.
I have yet to finish the Shadowhunters series (the size of the last book terrified me) and I haven’t read any of the offshoots. I have been watching the show on TV and ship Malec so hard!
LikeLiked by 1 person
You must; both of theirs books/series are some of my favorite fantasy books, even though they’re totally different! Ugh, I would probably pre-order it, but I’m broke, so waiting it is! Have definitely pre-ordered a book months before it’s release though, and I didn’t get it (that’s a horror story for another day).
Oh, God, that last book is giant. I read it in two days in middle school because my brother had a track meet that lasted all day, and I had no choice but to read to keep myself entertained. 😂 Malec is my life! I love the two of them! ❤

Yes to John Green and Adam Silvera!! (and JK Rowling, but that’s a given :D) John Green (I seriously don’t get the hate) and Adam Silvera (professional crusher of hearts and emotions) are my absolute favourite YA writers ❤

I don’t get the John Green hate, either! His books are so good and were definitely my faves in middle school! I really do feel like I need to re-read his books! And, yes, Adam Silvera kills me with his books every time! 😭

If you’re going to re-read any of them, I’m suggesting Looking for Alaska. That one’s my favourite ❤
Ugh. I know. I'm already "dreading" reading They Both Die at the End. You don't even need to read the summary to know it's going to hit you right in the feels

It’s my favorite, too! I was re-reading it a while ago, but, again, I got distracted by other books. 😂 I’m so excited for They Both Die At The End! I want to request an ARC, but the publisher is HarperTeen, and I think they’re one of those imprints that only accepts people with 1,000 followers on their blog, FB, Twitter, or Instagram…and I’m not close by a mile. 😩
