Yeah, it’s my favorite part of the month! The one where I finally get to publish the posts I worked on for about an hour and a half, like, months ago!Β
I decided it’d be fun to do a recommendations post based off of TV shows, which is funny, since I can barely finish a show, but, you know, whatever.
(Also, I am posting this super early. Like, early in the morning. Weird things happened, and I decided to just post this early instead of waiting hours later, so here we are!)
…if you like evil girls.
…if you want a read-alike.
You liked the ridiculousness and addictive quality of Pretty Little Liars? Here are two books – the first horror and the second a thriller – with secrets and twists and evil girls.
…if you like complex fantasy and politics.
You like the war and the complex politics and the betrayal and the cast of characters? Meet Yarvi (and some other people because this is a companion series), who ends up becoming a king even though he doesn’t want to, and then gets betrayed soon after, and then meets a ragtag group of prisoners.
…if you like the “WTF” feeling.
…if you like the alternate universe Brooker likes to explore.
You like the weirdness and complexity of Black Mirror that makes you thing and effs with your mind? Here are two books that will give you the same feeling! Yeah for being more depressed and weirded out!
…if you like a smart female heir in charge.
…if you want a bent retelling of true historical events surrounding badass ladies.
You tired of hearing about men, men, men whenever you learn, read, or watch something about history or want a smart female character for a change? Here’s a read for some smart ladies, and a read for the badass ones.
(Or both, since we don’t have to limit ourselves to one.)
…if you like girls overcoming obstacles.
…if you like girls getting revenge.
…if you like girls turning stereotypes on their head.
I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl
You like a group of ladies subverting common tropes, or just feminism and gender politics in general? Here are four novels that you’ll probably devour.
(Note: The Power is out in the U.K., but not in the U.S. until October 10 of this year, unfortunately, but it still sounds awesome, right?).
…if you like the action and the drama.
You want a book about politics that’s plain drama and action and plot twists? Meet Zero Day, a mix between a political book and a mystery/thriller.
…if you like murder, mystery, and mayhem.
You want a YA book about serial killers? Okay, so the main character isn’t a serial killer, his father is, but, still. Same difference.
…if you like seeing groups of people getting into trouble with the law.
You like being on the edge of your seat to see what’s going to happen to the Keating Five (shh, don’t spoil) and like shipping gay couples on the side? Here are two books – one YA, one adult – that are basically the same thing!
…if you like secret societies, hackers, and boys in hoodies.
You like seeing all the government conspiracies and the hacking and the eclectic cast of characters and the secret societies? Here’s an underrated sci-fi/mystery series that tackles just that.
…if you like the forbidden romance.
…if you like to see both sides.
When Michael Met MinaΒ (U.K./Australia)/The Lines We Cross (U.S.)
…if you want both the romance AND to see both sides.
You like the romance and the drama and, of course, the scandals in a lighter setting?Β Here are three books that deal with girls (and boys, in the second) around controversial subject matter and investigate the secrets of politics.
…if you want a read-alike.
The Anna Dressed in the Blood Dulogy
…if you like it when the Winchesters get caught up in creepy PNR crap.
The Girl from the Well Duology
You wish you could be solving mysteries with the Winchesters and hop straight into Dean’s arms (because same)? Then here are two books that will give you those same unsettling feeling.
…if you like the idea of teenagers being left on the world without adults.Β
…if you like the idea of teenagers banding together against evil.
You like the idea of teenagers running the world? Here are a couple more books dealing with that same concept.
(Unfortunately, there’s not a gif of the opening credits. Boo.)
…if you like the sarcasm of Brian Kinney and the perfection of Justin Taylor.
…if you like the angst.
…if you like the friendship between Melanie and Lindsey with the boys or the general sense of pride.
…if you like the nerdiness of Michael and the religious angst of Brian Kinney.
How to Repair a Mechanical Heart
You like the idea of reading about boy-loving boys with a touch of angst and sarcasm and pride and friendship? Here are four novels (How to Repair a Mechanical Heart is my personal favorite, but, whatever) that’ll model those feelings!
Okay, that took me about an hour and a half.Β I hope you guys thought it was adequate enough, and I gave you some interesting recs (quick reminder that I worked forever on this; holy crap).
Any books you’ve read that fit under any of the categories? Feel free to put them in the comments!
Wow, I really like this idea and I agree about your Supernatural rec. Would it be okay if I did something similar in a few months?

Thank you; I actually still need to read Anna Dressed in Blood (and I know you talk so highly about it)! And, yes, definitely! I don’t own this idea; so many book blogs have done it before me, so go right ahead! π

I use the Pachyderm theme, which is free! I love it as well, it’s very clean and nice! π

The Power is sitting on my nightstand right now. I can’t wait to dig in, I’ve heard so many good things!
The Secret History is an absolutely phenomenal book! I’m so excited to see it here π

Ugh, so lucky! I can’t wait for it to come out in the U.S.; it sounds absolutely brilliant! I’m glad to hear it; I couldn’t finish it last year because it was so big and I had to return it to the library, but I really want to finish it!

Great post that has definitely added a few books to my tbr mountain. I would add one book to your list. If you like Dexter I’d also recommend Sweetpea by CJ Skuse. It’s like Dexter crossed with Bridget Jones Diary. Very dark and disturbing but really funny.

I’m glad it did; I love making people’s TBR grow! π Ooh, I’ve heard good things about that book! I don’t know if it’s available in the U.S., but it sounds awesome! π

Ooh now I’m super interested in The Secret History because I love HTGAWM! Also I’ll be checking out Reign if you’ve compared it to The Winner’s Curse (which is one of my favourites!)

Yes, I haven’t been able to read the full thing because it’s a giant book, but what I read of it was so good! You’ll probably love it! I didn’t like either, which is very fitting, now that I think about it. π

I’ll have to check out all of these, especially the recs for books similar to Black Mirror, I loooove the show! Also, yes to shipping Connor and Oliver!

YES BLACK MIRROR IS SO GOOD. I demand a season four, like, right now. π Connor and Oliver are my babies; I love them! I haven’t watched season 3 yet, and I heard that it’s rough for them, and I was like, “Nooooo!” π

Gosh I have friends who LOVE Supernatural and The 100! I’ll have to let them know about these recs. π And I’ve been meaning to read Beware that Girl by Teresa Toten! It sounds really awesome. π

Ugh, I love Supernatural! I really need to continue on with the show; I sick terribly at binging. π I sort of fell off the tracks with The 100 and never went back to watching it, and I didn’t care enough to catch up, so there went that! And yes, I really want to read it soon! I’m always on the look out for a YA thriller!

I love this recommendation post, Mikaela! I will definitely be checking out the recs for Supernatural and Game of Thrones, as those are favorites of mine. And a lot of the other books you reced are actually on my TBR or I’ve read. Like The Winner’s Curse, that trilogy is one of my all-time favorites. It’s so good. I really need to read How to Repair a Mechanical Heart, I’ve been seeing it a lot on the blogosphere lately. π

Thank you; I’m so glad you did, Melissa! π I’m not a huge fan of the Winner’s trilogy, but I know so many people like it! And yes, you most definitely should read How to Repair a Mechanical Heart! It’s sooo good. π

I plan on it! With all the good things I’ve heard about it it’s definitely high on my list for when I’m in the mood for a contemporary read. π

This is a great recommendation post, and you’ve definitely given me some books and TV programs I need to check out. I loved The Winner’s trilogy but haven’t actually seen Reign so I will definitely be checking that show out when I next get a chance, and I love Supernatural but haven’t read Anna Dress in Blood (despite enjoyed Kendare Blake’s books) so that’s going to have to go on my to-read list as well.
Most of these TV shows are ones I still have on my to-watch list. Guess I need to get started on watching them so I can then read the books you’ve recommended! π

Ooh, I hope you enjoy Reign! I tried to read it and just couldn’t get into it at all, so I hope you enjoy it better than I did! I still haven’t read any of Blake’s books, which is a tragedy. π
Haha, I don’t watch many of these TV shows, so I hope you enjoy them? π I’m going to have a post coming up next month about my favorite TV shows that I’m excited about!

I hope so too, I’ve seen some trailers for the first season and it looks quite good. I think most of her books have some mixed reviews but the ones I’ve picked up so far I’ve quite enjoyed so hopefully you will as well.
I’m pretty much the opposite because I always have my TV on, even if it’s just watching repeats. π And that sounds interesting, I’ll be looking forwards to that post from you. π
