[TAG] In Which I Share My Unpopular Bookish Opinions

File_000 (39)

Hey, look; it’s been forever since I’ve done a tag! So, let’s do that!

I’ve decided to do the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag, mainly because I love talking about my unpopular opinions and finding people who agree with me. I am the Queen of Unpopular Opinions, and I will fight you for the title. But, seriously, I do have a lot of unpopular opinions – not even just in books, but life in general – and I thought a tag would be a fun way to share them!

arrow

1. A Popular Book or Series You Didn’t Like

File_004 (14).jpeg

HAHA, where do I start? I actually have a whole list of my least favorite series – which I’ll be linking to here – so I’m not going to re-list them all, but probably my top unpopular opinion regarding series is The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. I thought I’d love this one, but the romance was just too much, and the sequel bored me to death. Kestrel is just too good for Arin. And for book, probably The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. I literally can’t find one single soul who didn’t love this book, but I thought it was just meh. It was over-saturated with plot twists that got annoying after a while, and I was just missing something, I guess? I thought the ending was pretty good, though!

2. A Popular Book or Series That Everyone Else Seems to Hate But You Love

cursed-child

Funnily enough, I also have an entire post dedicated to unpopular books I like, which you can find right here! BUT, for the purpose of this question and not wanting to repeat my entire list again, I think my number one is probably The Cursed Child. Everyone literally hates it and found it SO disappointing – but I read it in a day and cried and I loved it. And this book also proved that my Albus and Scorpius ship that I’ve been sailing on since 2013 has solid concrete evidence, so, there’s that.

3. A Love Triangle Where the Main Character Ended Up with the Person You Didn’t Want Them to End Up with OR an OTP That You Don’t Like

File_005 (9)

Fortunately, I’ve never lost a love triangle (MWAHAHAHA), so I decided on an OTP I don’t like. And that’s Mara and Noah from the Mara Dyer trilogy. Honestly, I just really hate Noah and think he’s a pretentious jerk, so he could just disappear and all would be solved and make me ten times happier, to be honest. But everyone seems to love him apparently??? Ew.

4. A Popular Book Genre That You Hardly Reach For

File_002 (31).jpeg

I usually read a little something from every genre because I’m usually pulled in by synopsis’, not genres, but contemporary is probably the answer for this one. Especially the phrase “cute contemporary.” Whenever someone says that a contemporary book was “adorable” or “cute” or “fluffy,” I’m just never going to read it ever. Maybe I’m a masochist who likes death and torture and sadness and panic, but I just get bored reading about people falling in love in the real world with real problems. And I don’t think I’ve ever liked fluff??? Basically, I’m a monster.

5. A Popular or Beloved Character That You Don’t Like

File_007 (11).jpeg

Jace Herondale from The Mortal Instruments Series! I mean, I love all of Cassandra Clare’s books TO DEATH, but both times I read The Mortal Instruments, I was greatly annoyed by Jace. I mean, he probably wasn’t a trope when this book was published (way back in 2007), but after so many years of YA, I’m tired of sarcastic jerk-ish bad boys who have daddy issues and are using their sarcasm as a shield for how sweet they are. PASS.

6. A Popular Author That You Can’t Seem to Get Into

File_006 (8).jpeg

This one’s easily Lauren Oliver. I read Before I Fall and LOVED IT – it’s still one of my all-time favorite contemporaries – and every single one of the books I’ve read from her after that have been total duds and I’ve DNF-ed them all. I only have Vanishing Girls left from her, but I love a good YA thriller, so, hopefully, this one’s good?

7. A Popular Book Trope That You’re Tired of Seeing

File_008 (7).jpeg

I don’t even know if this counts as a book trope (it probably doesn’t), but when it comes to thrillers, YA or Adult, I’m getting really tired of the “OH MY GOD; YOU LITERALLY COULD HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS COMING BECAUSE IT MAKES ZERO SENSE AND IS IN NO WAY GROUNDED IN REALITY” plot twists. I feel like all the thrillers I’ve read this year so far have either been amazing, or they’ve fallen flat because of this strange need for a random plot twist that doesn’t have any evidence built up behind it. I’m going to blame the popularity of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train for this since everyone is trying to be the “next big thing,” but it only works the first couple of times before I get tired of it.

8. A Popular Series That You Have No Interest in Reading

Following the cute contemporary trend I mentioned earlier, I’ll probably never read a Kasie West book, a Morgan Matson book, a Jenny Han book, or any of the books in the Anna and the French Kiss series. I know everyone loves these authors and their books to the moon and back, but I literally get bored reading the synopsis’ of these books. I DON’T LIKE FLUFF. I’M SORRY.

9. The Saying Goes, “The Book Is Always Better Than the Movie,” but What Movie or T.V. Show Adaptation Do You Prefer More Than the Book?

File_001 (43).jpeg

The Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children movie for sure! I read the first book of the series and really enjoyed it, but then read the second book and was so bored by it that I DNF-ed it. But the movie was actually SO GOOD, and I loved how Burton completely changed the plot because it made for a much entertaining movie. And, personally, I always thought that this series should have just been a stand-alone, and the movie’s storyline expressed it perfectly, so there’s that!

And that was the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag!

I hope you enjoyed reading about all the things I like and don’t like that are totally unpopular! You guys really seem to like reading about my unpopular opinions because those used to be some of my most popular posts when I was a bit of a smaller blog.

Regarding tagging people, I never really tag specific people for these things, I just leave it open so anyone who wants to do this tag may do it! So, go ahead, and have fun with it!

  1. -You’re the queen of unpopular opinions? We might have a fight on our hands! 😝
-I’m glad to know you actually enjoyed The Cursed Child – I bought it the day it came out (something I never do) and then I saw all of the 1 and 0 star reviews and now I really do not feel confident enough to brave reading it.
-Oh my god, you don’t like Jace?? Thank you so much for your existence!
-I love that you don’t care about any of the Morgan Matson or Jenny Han books – I have zero interest in them either, they sound so ridiculous and the main characters sound pretty ditzy from what I’ve heard.

    • A fight??? NO! I could never fight you. 😂

Yeah, I know there were a lot of people who decided to just not buy it or read it, which I don’t mind! I actually don’t have a physical copy; I bought it as an ebook. Which sucks, because the book is GORGEOUS! 😍

      No, I don’t! And I thought Will was overrated. 🙈 I just don’t like Herondales, I guess? 😂 I love Jem, though!

Haha, same! I’ve read so many reviews of the books, I feel like I don’t have to read them??? I feel that about a lot of contemporary books, especially ones that are super hyped; I read, like, six reviews, and I don’t feel like reading the book anymore because what else can happen besides what you said in the review??? Maybe that’s just me. 😂

  2. I am with you on almost all of these about from the John Greene. It is not a fluffy book. Too emotional and probably one of the saddest books that I have ever read. Death, torture, sadness, panic…yeah all that can be found in that book. Give it a try someday 🙂 Great post.

  3. Hi my name is Joce and I feel personally offended by the way you cruelly dismissed Jace in all of his wonderfulness (lol)… movie jace sucked but book jace was incredible

  4. Great tag! I feel you on the Jace Wayland front…he wasn’t awful, but it was annoying. I get real tired of that character persona in books. It’s completely overdone and it makes it seem okay to be a jerk when you have a bad life or family issues…when it doesn’t excuse it. I was totally focusing on Magnus and Alec in that series anyways ha-ha! I am totally one of those people who couldn’t stand Cursed Child. I’m glad you enjoyed it though!

    • Yes, I agree! I mean, Rhysand from the ACOTAR series went through awful crap, but he’s still a nice guy who makes snarky jokes. Like, it’s not HARD to make a sarcastic love interest that isn’t a douchebag. Those things don’t have to go hand in hand! And, same; I remember reading COHF and was like, “All I want is Malec; could literally care less about Clace.” 😂

  5. I totally agree with the Miss Peregrines movie!! I did love the book series but the movie was so good!! It’s Tim Burton so of course it’s amazing!! The woman who played Miss Peregrine was just amazing!!! Great post

  6. Okay, so, I Didn’t like The Cursed Child because..well, a lot of reasons. As a book, I gave it 3 stars but put it next to HP, where were the FUNNY characters, the solid plot, the actual experiences in Hogwarts, ahem, there was none. But anyways, that’s mu opinion which us unpopular and popular because a lot of people still like it because it was HP.

I’m not too into ‘cute’ contemporaries either. I tried it with The Selection, a combination of Dystopia and Romance, and gosh, no, it was, OKAY? I’ve only read 1 book by Lauren Oliver, which was Replica, and it was meh, okay, kinda good? I REALLY SO BADLY Want to read Delirium because that premise sounds so promising.

I hate the unrealistic plot twists in books – It’s like they didn’t even plan them to make sense, just dumped it in to liven up the book a little. I WANT IT TO MAKE SENSE< for there to have been clues dotted all around the pages, for it to lead up it fit perfectly, for it all to click into place when the twist is revealed.
I've read Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children but haven't seen the movie just yet, i really want to though. I'm putting off reading the other books…just because?

    • Haha, I feel like more people hate it than like it. I remember seeing my old friends on Goodreads hate on it, and I could count on my fingers those that didn’t. 😂 But I just loved it for what it was (AND CRIED LIKE A CHILD). But I know that’s just me!

I barely categorize The Selection as a dystopian. It’s a romance through and through, no matter what. 😂 I DNF-ed Replica, and I Delirium bored me out of my mind. And I heard it had a love triangle, so a hard pass on that! 😂

YES EXACTLY. I want my plot twists to make sense. Like, I’m okay with crazy things happening – as long as you imply in some way what will!

I DNF-ed the sequel, but you might have better luck! 😄

  7. I don’t like Jace either! Or really any of the love interests in Clare’s novels…I don’t really like Clare’s books….so there’s that hahah But I have to go against you with cute contemporaries hahaha I LOVE my fantasy, but sometimes I’m in a slump and short, cute, fluffy, contemporaries pull me out of it. Although, I have noticed I’m not AS into them as I once was – might have to do with the fact that the 16 year old romances aren’t up my alley anymore as a married 26 year old hahahh

    • Haha, I know you don’t like Cassandra Clare! 😂 I feel meh about her love interests – I don’t like Julian from LM, and I think Will is overrated. 🙈 But I love Jem and Simon??? I don’t know if I can count Alec and Magnus since they’re each other’s love interests, but I like them, too! It seems like the main ones aren’t my thing. I actually find it funny how adults are more obsessed with contemporaries than I am – shouldn’t I be as a teenager??? 😂 But I literally have zero interest in boys and romance right now, so maybe that’s it!

  8. Great answers for this tag Mikaela. Unfortunately I can’t say I agree with them because I loved The Winner’s Trilogy and I also love books that are described as cute and fluffy. I do love hardship and torment in the books I pick up as well but there are times when I just want something light as a bit of a break from all the heartache you know?
I still need to watch the Miss Peregrine’s film, the trailer looked amazing and hearing you say you enjoyed the film more than the book has made me even more excited to get around to it one day (despite the fact that I did love the books as well.)
Again great answers for this tag. 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you! I know most people love The Winner’s trilogy (I feel like the only who doesn’t lol)! My light books are usually adult M/M romance – and if not that, I read fanfiction every night when I’m in bed, so that’s really all I need. 😂

Ooh, you should totally watch it! They definitely changed some things from the book, including the ending, but I thought it fit and was really nice! 😄

  9. Great answers! I don’t agree with most of them but that is the point of the tag I guess! And I’m sure I have unpopular opinions too. I’m just a fluffy contemporary girl at heart, but I completely understand that some people just can’t stand it.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I think we all have unpopular bookish opinions deep inside of us. 😂 Yeah, same! I love me some dark, gritty thrillers, but I know there are people out there who can’t STAND them – and that’s totally fine. 😄

      Liked by 1 person

  10. I know people usually end upset with these posts but I honestly love them 😂 Even though I like some of the books you’ve mention here I still agree with you!
Also seeing another perspective of a book you enjoyed (or didn’t) is refreshing!

    Liked by 1 person

    • I honestly get interested with these! 😂 Half because I want to see if they agree and half to see if they hate my favorite books (even though I hope they don’t). 😂

It both is and isn’t! I’m one that really hates reading negative reviews of my favorite books. I just can’t. 🙈 I know some people are better at it than I am though. 😂

      Like

    • Same! And it sucks, because I loved her debut, and you’d think that her books would get better the more I read them, but nope! Vanishing Girls is my last shot; I hope it’s better!

  11. This will forever be one of my favorite tags. Sorry you didn’t like The Winner’s Trilogy, I really enjoyed that one. (: But I sooooo agree about Jace. The sarcastic jerk with daddy issues who is just using it as a shield to cover up how sweet they are… GAG ME WITH A SPOON. Granted, you may be right and it might not have been such a cliche when she wrote him… tenish years ago. But still. I never liked him. Blegh.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I definitely don’t think it was a cliche back in 2007 (SO LONG AGO), probably like the bland female protagonist was never really around until Twilight, but I read it so late that the trope was so tired. 😂

  12. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the winner’s curse! It’s one of my favourite trilogies but I understand why it isn’t for everyone as it is quite slow paced! This is such a fantastic tag and one that I surprisingly haven’t done before so I’ll have to try this out for sure!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I feel like it was one of those books that I thought would be right up my alley, but wasn’t. 😩 But the romance was too much for me. Ooh, you should definitely do it; it’s super fun! 😁

  13. I agree with what you said about Jace. I actually prefer him on the show because they gave him more depth as a character whereas in the books he’s quite annoying sometimes. / The Unexpected Everything is a good book but not mind blowing either. You’re not missing much! / I totally disagree about the cursed child. Haha, I refuse to accept it as canon. But it would be boring if we all felt the same way about things! I’m glad you enjoyed it tho. I prefer to only see the hp books/movies as canon 😀

    Liked by 1 person

    • Haha, I haven’t watched any of The Mortal Instruments adaptations. I’m not really pushed to watch any of them, though (but then again, I haven’t watched a whole slew of adaptations lol). 😂 Yeah, I heard it was pretty meh. Ooh, I never know how I feel about canon! I don’t think I mind much. I mean, I ship Drarry, and that’s certainly not canon (but I make it my own). 😂

      Liked by 1 person

      • Well, if you ever do, I highly recommend the TV Show. 🙂 / I don’t really have any set opinions on the romantic relationships to be honest. People are allowed to have preferences so I don’t mind. The couples in this story aren’t the reason I love it so much but then again I don’t really mind any kind of version of Harry with someone. Whether thats draco or hermione instead of Ginny.

        Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, it is! I remember seeing this Tweet that said it was so amazing that two people could read the same book, and one could love it and one could hate it. It’s really true how amazing that is! And thank you so much! I love taking bookish photos! ❤

      Like

    • Haha. 😂 I mean, I still love the series and all her books! Just not the Herondales – I don’t care much for Will winters and much prefer Jem. 😂

  14. This is such a fun post!! I’m with you on the cute contemporary – I almost always HATE it. Like why would I want to read about high school? Been there, done that, HATED IT… Except I’ll always love Kasie West, for some weird reason. xD
I’m with you on the Winner’s Curse series – I mean I liked it, but I didn’t think it was anything particularly special. I also totally skipped the whole sequel.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you, Lenna! Yeah, I’m in high school right now, and it’s torture. 😂 I’m ready for college and everything! And I’m also not interested in boys or romance, and most contemporaries are??? I still read contemporary, but I notice most of my faves are tearjerkers. 😂

Honestly, you could have! I mean, the only important part was the last couple of pages – everything else was boring romance filler. 😩

  15. Funnily enough, I love me some fluff. But I have to agree with you on Anna and the French Kiss. Never really got into those books. And somehow they just got worse which made me stop half-way through the second one. Something I hardly ever do. Cause you need to finish a book you started, right? Or am I the only one who is like that? 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • I mean, I read fluff in the fanfiction I read! I’ve just never liked it in my books. 😂 Yeah, I heard that the third one wasn’t really the great, and I’ve just never been intrigued enough to try out the series! I DNF books, but I know some people have finished every book they’ve started. 😂

      Liked by 1 person

      • I really wish I could just not finish a book sometimes. But then again, I always want to know what happens in the end. Even if it means skipping half of it and only reading a sentence every 10 pages… Tells you a lot about the quality of books I read sometimes 😀
