Hooray for complaining!
I’m sure we all have our personal pet peeves regarding books, you know, like things you hate to see in books or annoying authors or unpopular opinions, etc. I’d thought it be fun to make an entire post dedicated to my bookish pet peeves, so I hope you enjoy!
Insta-love
If you’ve been around here for a while, you guys probably know how much I HATE insta-love. I’m personally a huge fan of relationships that take time, especially the ones where the development takes place over several books. Remember the days of Percabeth and Romione where it takes them a good five-to-seven books to get together? So do I.
Douchebag Love Interests
I’m looking at you, Jace Herondale and Noah Shaw. I’m just not a huge fan of those teenage boys who are total players and act rude and like they don’t care, but all that they needed was this ordinary girl that doesn’t know she’s beautiful to come along and change their temperament. Barf.
Last Book Sex
I don’t know if this annoys everyone else, but I really hate how YA series seem to have this thing where couples kiss in the first book, go to third base in the sequel, and then have sex in the last book, and it bothers me SO MUCH. It’s probably why I appreciate Sarah J. Maas normalizing the idea of female characters not only not being always being virgins from the very beginning of the series and not being considered “sluts” for having sex before finding “The One,” but also that there’s not some weird “waiting period” where couples have to be together for some number of books to have sex.
Long Chapters
Okay, this makes me sound like I have a super short attention span (and I probably do, to be honest), but I just can’t stand long chapters. When your chapters are pushing past 20 pages, at that point, I’ve stopped paying attention to what’s going on, and more on wHEN WILL THIS DAMN CHAPTER END?
Love Interests Smelling Good
Wood. Pine. Cedar. Mint. Toothpaste. Man. Apparently, boys smell like this, and I’ve completely missed out on this phenomenon. Not to mention that this is AFTER these boys have gotten into a fight/been stabbed/been injured/run/literally any physical activity.
Overly Long Descriptions
You guys know that I LOVE Cassandra Clare, but, man, I could read one of her books, and it could be two pages later, and 90% of the time, I’d still be reading a description about the building Clary just entered! I mean, great description, but I’m the worst visual person on the planet. Unless there’s a movie adaptation of the book, all the characters look like shapeless blobs and all the settings in my mind look the same, so it’s just a waste of time, from my point of view.
When a Plot Twist Makes Zero Sense
As a huge thriller reader, this is a huge peeve of mine. Nothing annoys me more than when I read a YA or Adult thriller, and out of nowhere, there’s this huge plot twist that’s just there for shock value and has zero evidence backing it up or just straight up doesn’t make sense with the plot.
When Nothing Happens for 90% of the Book, Except for the Last 10%
It always seems like the books with the most awesome concepts always tend to do this or sequels fall victim to this. Nothing will happen a majority of the time during the book, but then we hit the last ten chapters, and ALL THE THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT ONCE. Like, at least have SOMETHING else happen besides boring romance angst or characters sitting around having disagreements.
When I Have to Sit Through 10 Exposition Chapters When the Synopsis Has Already Told Me What Happens
This isn’t really anyone’s fault, but I really hate it when a synopsis is like, “When Maria’s mother dies, a Grim Reaper arrives and asks if she’d like to die in place of her mother to save her.” (I made that up on the spot.) And then I start the book, and I have to sit through all this exposition for 100 pages even though I already know what’s going to happen and I just want to move on.
Ian Somerhalder Being Cast As Every Love Interest Ever
STOP DOING THIS. I swear to God, if a love interest is in any way angst-y or has a dark past or whatever, everyone will be like, “Ian Somerhalder for casting!!!” Stop ruining all of my book boyfriends! I’m probably the only person on this very earth that finds him unattractive, so it just bothers me.
People Hating on Adam Parrish
Again, this is more a personal thing, but when people hate Adam Parrish, it hurts my soul. I care about him so much and he deserves so many hugs, and, yeah, he makes some stupid decisions and says some mean things, but he is a human being who’s been constantly abused and is poor and just wants a better life for himself. HOW COULD YOU HATE HIM?
The Anxiety You Get When You Talk to People About What You’re Reading
I always get into a total panic when someone asks me what I’m reading, mainly because I suck at summarizing what in the world happens in the book. Like, if I explained a V.E. Schwab or Pierce Brown book to you guys, you’d probably get it, but if I told my mom, she’d probably wonder what the hell I’m reading.
People Judging What You Read
Okay, I’m horrible at this because I do it all the time, but I’m trying to get better at it! I personally hate it when someone judges any of the books I read, so I try not to do it at others (even though it’s hard to when they love a book you consider trash and hate a favorite of yours, but I’m tRYING).
People Whining About Harry Potter’s Kids’ Names
Anybody who is still whining about this a literal decade after the book has been published is bordering on being unhealthily obsessed at this point, in my opinion. Does it really matter what the fictional character named his kids? Does it really matter that the kids’ names are not Rubeus Remus Hagrid Lily James Sirius Dobby the Third? DOES IT REALLY?
And that’s it for all my bookish pet peeves!
I’d probably have even more if I listed every single one of them, but I’m going to refrain from doing so to make this post longer.
What are some of your bookish pet peeves? Do we share any of the same ones?
😂😂😂😂😂😂 @ Ian Somerhalder. I totally get your point on that one. I mean I think he’s good looking, but I get frustrated when people want to cast a type for every single plot.
Btw I actually used to work with him and he’s a super nice guy. But still doesn’t mean you should be forced to find him attractive, especially since he’s old enough to be your dad. 😂 Speaking of, why is that another new trope being forced in books and in real life? This whole “old men and young women” being normalized? It’s a topic I’ve always wanted to do a discussion on so maybe one day…

YOU WORKED FOR AN ACTOR???? Chelsea, what secrets in your past are you hiding! 😂
Yeah, same, I hate it! I feel like thrillers adopt this a lot, and it’s so creepy! And two-thirds of the time, it’s with someone that they knew as a child??? Like in My Husband’s Wife and The Silent Wife! 😄 You should do a discussion on it!

Lol well not technically for him. I was a stand in on The Vampire Diaries and did work as an extra as well. 👍🏼

Ian Somerhalder is too old to play YA characters now, right? He’s nearly 40!
I am all for the freedom of female sexuality. Chaste female characters are not what I want to be reading anymore.

hahaha I love this. I agree with the last book sex one – because of the things you mentioned and because it’s incredibly predictable. Also, YES to anxiety when talking to people about the book you’re reading. I don’t know why but whenever someone asks me what I reading I get all uncomfortable and forget what the hell the book is about lol

Thank you so much! Yeah, it is predictable! I’ve started to expect it in all the trilogies I read, which I really hate. 😝 I remember being frustrated when Clary and Jace didn’t have sex until the SIXTH BOOK. Like, they would have totally had sex way before then in real life. 😂 Haha, same! I usually stumble over my words and mildly panic.

Great list! I totally agree with you on Long chapters. I have this weird thing where when I start a new chapter, I thumb quickly through to the next just to see how long it is, and if the chapter is pushing past 20 pages I start losing hope haha.

😂 omg this list is amazing!! I agree with every one of them! Especially the douche bag love interest and the love interests smelling good. Why do they always smell like the woods or flowers? I mean I’ve never met a man that smelled like a pine tree 🌲!! And long chapters are honestly the worst! Being a “one more chapter” type of person it’s intimidating and I don’t want to push it. Fantastic post!!

BUT WHY DO THEY SMELL LIKE PINE TREE??? I make exceptions for Rowan Whitethorn…because he’s Rowan Whitethorn. 😂 AND SAME! Once I start a chapter, I NEED to finish it, which is probably why I’m terrible with long chapters.

OH My God I was laughing so hard with the smelling peevee, You’re so right guys always smell so nice even when they are sweating like pigs 🤣 I also dislike Insta love, Insta Lust I do get but how can you love someone you just met it’s ridiculous, I like a book much better when the relationship is a slow burning one.
I don’t talk much about what I read (well now I do on my blog) because my friends don’t read much and I feel a bit silly trying to explain plot points and twist when the response I get it’s just a blank stare.

Oh I have so many bookish pet peeves. My main one is when a cover design changes in the middle of a series. God I really hate that but that’s slightly off topic. 🙂 I agree with a lot of the ones on your list; instalove I cannot stand, and actually douchebag love interests are another one. They are both things that I think need to be completely stricken from YA books.
I still hear people complaining about Harry’s kids names. If he had named his child Rubeus Remus Hagrid Lily James Sirius Dobby the Third then that would maybe be a valid reason to complain after a decade still because wow, what a name, but Albus Severus isn’t so bad. 🙂
Great post Mikaela, it was such fun to read! 😀

Yes, same. GET RID OF BAD BOYS AND INSTA-LOVE PLEASE. I would be much happier. 😄
I saw someone on Twitter say Remis Rubeus would be a better name. UM…NO??? It sounds literally terrible. I know some people don’t like the name because they don’t like the characters, but I love the characters (BLASPHEMY), so it doesn’t matter to me??? And Albus Severus isn’t that bad of a name to me! 😂
Thank you; I’m glad you enjoyed reading it! 😄

That’s definitely a good thing. There have been too many series I’ve had it happen to and I’ve either had to live with it or buy the new covers as well.
It would definitely make room for more original tropes, and we could definitely do with a break from both those things.
I don’t think it would be. It’s too rhyme-y with S being the end sound of both names. I mean to be honest I agree with your point in your post. It’s been so long since the last book was released people can’t still be that upset about it.
That’s all right! 😀

I PRETTY MUCH RELATE TO EVERYTHING HERE. Especially insta-love. OH MY GOOOOOSH I haaaate insta-love. That’s honestly my number one pet peeve. I mean, it’s fine if the characters look at each other for the first time ever and then they feel like “attracted” — but not when they glance at each other and decide THEY’RE MEANT TO BEEEEEEE. Or if they fall in love with the gleam in their eyes or whatever. Just AGH.
I like long chapters??? They just can’t be TOO long, lol. And OVERLY LONG DESCRIPTIONS SUCK. Like you said, characters are faceless blobs and while I visualize setting that’s not really as described, I DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. XD Noooo don’t hate on my dear baby Adam! Honestly Ronan is much crueler than Adam and do you hate on him??? NO. ADAM IS JUST AN ABUSED, POOR SOUL. ❤
(And omg I freaking HATE when people judge what I read. I mean, if they don't like the book, sure whatever have your own opinions. But when you haven't even READ the book and you're judging ME for reading it, um… no???)
LikeLiked by 1 person
YES YES! I don’t mind insta-attraction – that’s normal, everyone has that- but just not insta-love. You can’t be in love because of one look! I refuse! Like, even when people in real life say that they fell in love at first sight, I don’t believe it. 😂
Haha, I just can’t picture anything for the life of me. Unless there’s a movie and casting. But other than that, nah.
I LOVE ADAM. I don’t think Ronan is cruel; I’m biased because he’s my fave. 😂 And he’s so sweet with Chainsaw! But Adam is my baby; I will protect him!

I get so anxious when people IRL ask me what I’m reading! I don’t know why, but I always stumble over my words. Plus I feel like I have to justify my reading choices considering I’m 27 and still reading about 17-year olds! So mostly I just don’t talk about books offline, ever. It’s super weird.

First, you are NOT alone with the Ian Somerhalder thing! I mean, dude is pushing 40, which isn’t OLD, but like… he can’t play 18 year olds either. Let’s be real, it looks like someone’s creepy uncle showed up to the party, and that isn’t a cute look ever. (I don’t fnd him attractive either, but I guess he kind of has that brooding thing going on, if you’re into that? I am not.)
And YES about the smelling of love interests! Like no, actually, in this dystopian set in the wilderness on the run, John LoveInterest is going to smell like body odor. Because he is in the woods. And doesn’t have soap or water or a toothbrush. And is sweaty. I HATE long chapters too. And overly long descriptions, which tbh, seem to go hand in hand a lot? I am not a fan. And insta love is SO annoying. As are douchey love interests. Sends such a bad message.
Also, totally agree about the last book sex thing! I hadn’t thought about it like that but you are SO RIGHT. That IS infuriating! I also think it is hilarious that people care about a character’s kid names so much. Granted, I have no idea what any of that means (I know, I know!) but still. Seems excessive. LOVE this post!

Yes, I actually found out that he’s apparently 38??? When did that happen??? 😂 That seems pretty old to me to be on a TV show about vampires for teenagers, but I guess I can’t judge??? Yes, I’ve never understood why they smell so good? Especially those weird scenes where the girl is trying to heal his wounds and starts talking about how he smells like mint…like what????
Yeah, they usually do! Cassie Clare’s books have ridiculously long chapters and descriptions in the first book! Still love he series though. 😂
And, yes, I’ve noticed it so much in the last few years, and it’s gotten old really fast. Like, I’ve started to EXPECT it to happen that way, which I really shouldn’t. YES to not caring for insta-love, last book sex, and the love interest smelling good. And everything you said about SJM. I’m so glad she normalized that too! But seriously I can’t stand insta-love at all and would take a slow-build romance over it any day. When the romance goes too fast it completely ruins the character development and makes the book all about the romance and just no thank you. And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t care for the love interest smelling good thing. Though it does mean a lot of great book candles eventually 😂. BUT whenever they’ve been in a battle or something it just doesn’t make sense. Or whenever they’re in a dystopia without shows. I mean, why? There’s no way they could smell good. 🤦 Great post, Mikaela!

As far as fantasy goes SJM was definitely the one to normalize it, at least for me, because I’ve yet to read another fantasy that doesn’t fall into the last book trap. Arghh insta-love is the WORST. I feel like authors (and most likely publishers) are super clued onto insta-love now and that it barely ever happens. Or I’m just really good at picking up books with slow-burn romances lol.
I am also over douche-bag love romances, I mean I’m all for slow burn romances because they genuinely don’t like each other. Not because the love interest is just a douche bag. I mean guys that are douche-bags in real life don’t really get the time of day from me, so I hate reading about them in books.
I don’t mind ‘last book’ sex because I guess it feels like time has passed enough that they’re ready to sleep with each. But what I do find annoying is when sex is taboo, when they can’t go ‘too far’ when making out because it’s not ‘right’. I too love that Sarah J. Maas has totally made it okay for NA books to have sex in the first book and for MC to actually fall in love with more than one man at different times. The relationships grow.
Hahaha it always makes me roll my eyes when I read that a character smells amazing. I mean you’re right, I never really notice that men smell like ‘pine’ or ‘sandlalwood’ etc. To be fair, I don’t really know what sandalwood smells like lol.

Yeah, same; I love hate-to-love romances! It’s one of my favorite tropes of ever. But I am sick of when it becomes some excuse to have the guy be a total jerk with zero redemption. That’s not acceptable to me.
That makes sense! But, yeah, I hate that, too! Or just any sort of weird obstacle where they can’t have sex. Like that whole Clary/Jace situation where he had fire inside him and it would kill Clary if they went further then kissing. That was unnecessary! 😝 And I feel the same! I know some hate all the different love interests, but it feels realistic to me!
ME NEITHER. There are candles out there that smell like it though, so I guess I could find out??? 😂
Thank you! ❤

Great post, I get really annoyed with the o sex until the last book especially when its paired with insta love as if they fell in love straight away them why are they waiting so long. And I love Adam Parrish.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I hate it! I don’t really ship Clary and Jace from The Mortal Instruments, but it annoyed me that it took them six books to have sex. Like, no. 😂 I LOVE ADAM PARRISH! ❤

I don’t mind Clary and Jace but thought waiting six books was really annoying. It’s bad enough when you have to wait till the last book in a trilogy never mind long series.
