Welcome to the Blogging Diaries!
So, my six month blogiversary is actually THIS MONTH – the 20th, to be exact – and I thought a good way to celebrate it would be with a new series! So, this month will be all about blogging – how I do things, blogging tags, tips for new book bloggers, tutorials, etc. I’m super excited for this month, and I hope you guys are as well!
So, I thought it’d be nice to kick off the series with this post! In my Let’s Chat a couple of months ago when I talked about balancing blogging, books, and life, some of you guys seemed so amazed at how far ahead I am in terms of planning and written posts! So, I thought it’d be fun to talk about how I usually plan a whole month of blog posts ahead of time!
#1: Brainstorming is key.
It really is. If you’re reading a discussion post, and want to write your own take on the topic, write it down. If you’re doing something else, like cooking or cleaning or whatever, and you think of an idea, write it down. If you’re reading a book and something in it inspires an idea, write it down. If you see a tweet or Instagram post that you think would make a good blog post, write it down. Don’t think you’ll remember it, because, trust me, you will not and then hate yourself for not writing it down when you should have.
Personally, I write down all ideas I have, discussion topics I want to tackle, tags I’m tagged in (or I haven’t been tagged in and just want to do), or any old topics for memes that I think I could turn into fully-fledged posts in the Notes app on my phone. They just sit there forever and ever until I’m in extreme planning mode for next year’s post (yes, I do this, and yes, I’m well aware it’s not normal). But, if you’re NOT like me and plan normally for the next month or so, it’s easier to have all these ideas to choose from rather than stressing out because you have no ideas and can’t remember the ones you had!
#2: Decide what you want to post.
I mean, obviously. This is sort of detrimental to the whole process. But plan out what you want to post! For example, if you want to do some memes. For those that have topics based around them – such as Top Ten Tuesday or Top 5 Wednesday – look at the blog that hosts it so you can see what the future topics will be and know which books you’re going to choose! If it’s Waiting on Wednesday, look up some books that are coming out soon. Trust me, being prepared will save you the stress from, “OH CRAP, IT’S TUESDAY TOMORROW; now I have to throw something together!”
But for anything else – whether it’s a review, discussion, list, recommendation post, or whatever else you can come up with – just decide which topics you want to tackle! Are there certain books coming out that you know FOR SURE you’re going to review that you need to read? Any ARCs being published this month? Is something happening this month that you can make a list or recommendation post out of (like a holiday-themed post)? Do you have any discussion posts based off something that happened last month that you want to jump in on, or just inspired by a book you finished last week? Or do you just not care that intricately about what you’re going to post and just prefer a general idea of when you’re going to post and what type it is?
Either way, deciding the month before is, again, much easier. I always plan what I’m going to post for the month before I even begin to start writing, at least!
#3: Off-days are perfect for getting ahead.
PERFECT. I’ve said before that the weekends are the time where I work on my blog, so that’s when I usually make my graphics, write blog posts, edit my blog, etc. Of course, that’s just me because I have school during the weekdays (at least, during the school year), and the weekends are my free time, but it might be totally different for you guys!
But, pretty much any day that you’re off – and by “off” I mean that in a blogging way and not a real life way – you can spend a little time working on posts and such! This is when I start my “writing mode,” usually, but just know that you don’t have to become the Writing Goddess or whatever and write ALL your blog posts for the next month. You can work on one, two, three, four, however many you want! There’s no minimum or maximum, and it’s totally okay.
#4: Planner Pro is your life savior.
You might be like, “What even IS Planner Pro???” But Planner Pro is this amazing free app that’s a calendar. Here is what it looks like once you set up an account:
And when you pick a date, this is what it looks like:
In the both pictures, you’ll see a gray circle with a “+” in it in the right hand corner, and if you click that, it’ll give you a list of options: Add Note, Add Task, or Add Event. I usually click “Add Task,” and from there, you’re able to title the task, set the due date, add a description, etc.
Then you can click the “Save” button, and, voila! You’re done! Once you’ve posted the post or edited it or whatever, you can click the check box next to the task seen in the second picture, and it scratches it off.
Personally, it’s an amazing tool for me. Not only does it function as both a calendar and a sort of to-do list, but you can plan months and months ahead. This is why I know what I’m going to post for the full year! It has no limits. So, very helpful, for those who like organizing, but constantly change things like I do.
#5: Always have back-ups.
And by this, I mean back-ups regarding posts. As I’m writing this, I have a couple of back-ups (not completely edited, though. OOPS. Now they are! Good job, Future Me!) just in case something falls through or I don’t feel like posting something or I change my plans. For example, when I was in a reading slump last May and wasn’t posting too many reviews. Luckily, I had a couple of back-ups to post on Mondays until I did, so I wasn’t completely and totally in the dark. Your back-ups don’t have to be COMPLETELY MARVELOUS ORIGINAL IDEAS; for instance, you can write and edit some tags or awards you’ve been tagged in or some reviews of books that you haven’t reviewed on your blog yet or use an old Top 5 Wednesday idea for a post! But it’s always nice to have something to fall back on in case everything goes to crap.
#6: Don’t feel scared of going off track.
SERIOUSLY. DON’T. I plan everything to the T, and things change all the time regarding my blogging schedule. Like, last month, SO MANY POSTS that were going to go up, didn’t. Most of the reviews I wanted to post, THE BOOKS WEREN’T EVEN READ (curse the reading slump). I changed things 28420840 times. I switched post dates 84928402 times. I was writing posts for May IN MAY (and I rarely do that). So, don’t feel like you MUST stick to your schedule or everything will fall apart. Because it will not, and the people that read your stuff will probably not even notice you were having a breakdown behind the scenes.
And those are the tips I can give as a certified over-organizer.
(But, seriously, I’m TOO organized when it comes to blogging, and a hot mess regarding everything else; someone please help me.)
Hopefully, that’ll help any of you guys who were thinking of getting ahead or might want to in the future or for those who are just curious!

These are all great tips! I’m trying to write as many posts in advance as possible for summer because I know I’ll be away for a while. I try to keep track of what I still need to write by making plannings and lists and I also have some backup posts in my drafts!

My notes are all a mess. I have several drafts on my pc but I also have notebooks scattered around my room and dorm room and I should check all the ideas I wrote down on those as well.

THIS SERIES IS SO HELPFUL!
Well, so far! This post is like the best ever! I started writing my post ideas down in my BuJo but then because of exams, I stopped filling that in and I really need to start again! I used to have like 5 backup posts constantly and now, because this year is so hectic, I just have like NONE? Though, because of this post, I’m going to be using my little holiday as a chance to catch up with writing posts, brainstorming, and maybe downloading that app! Such a great post!

Yeah, I used to have a blogging journal, but ended up ditching it because I cross things out and switch everything up a lot, and it annoyed me how messy my journal was. 😂 Yeah, I only started writing back-up posts last month because of how hectic it was. 😬 Thank you, Mahriya! ❤

Scheduling posts ahead of time is WHAT I LIVE FOR. Honestly, it's so satisfying to know that you are set in the blog post department for weeks. Right now I'm pretty much scheduled until the first week of July with the exception of a book review or two that I still have to write. My goal for summers is always to try to get ahead far enough that I can start scheduling for the fall when school starts up again and I have zero time to blog. Fingers crossed that can happen this summer!

Like, I’m hoping to finish my posts for July next week, and I might be finished with August before the end of June if I’m still on track (which would be awesome). 😄 Yeah, I want to get ahead as soon as possible since junior year of high school is starting, and I don’t know what time I’ll have? So might as well get ahead! 😂

Oh my gosh Mikaela, you honestly come up with the BEST ideas. A whole blogging-related month for your blogiversary??? I LOVE IT. What I like to do is brainstorm post ideas for the next month. When the current month is drawing to an end, I’ll sort it into the days that I’ll post them. I’ll leave some days open though, for anything unexpected. It usually works for me! I sort of want to be prepared for the next year??? Actually that seems too far — though I’m amazed you thought of ideas to last a WHOLE YEAR!

I usually start arranging posts into certain dates after I finish a previous month’s posts! I’m a perfectionist and refuse to move on to another month’s posts unless all the posts for the month before it are written, edited, and have graphics. 😂
TOO MUCH BRAINSTORMING. My head is constantly in the clouds, so I’m always thinking of things. It’s very weird. 😝

YES. I’m so glad you wrote this post haha Guess what? For the first time – literally ever – I’m A WHOLE MONTH ahead with my blog posts (except book reviews since I write those as I read, and my bi weekly chat because obviously). But still. A WHOLE MONTH. I did that yesterday and literally thought to myself “I’M LIKE MIKAELA!” hahha

Great tips and I’m looking forward to reading more of these posts in the future! I’m also an organizer so this past week I started out with a bunch of different prompts I’d like to write about and then scheduled them all so I’m slowly but surely making good progress on posts up until mid-August which is pretty crazy!

I’m the same way, I love being super-organized and planning ahead. I’m usually about a month ahead, as well. A lot of these tips are things I utilize as well – I keep a list of potential topics and memes are something I usually do way ahead of time, so that helps. I use a paper calendar to plan everything out, though!

Those are some really, really great tips, Mikaela! And I’ll definitely have to look into that app you mentioned as I’ve been quite curious about what it was ever since you mentioned it!
I think one of the most important thing about blogging is hands down brainstorming and so it’s rightfully the first thing you talked about! One night, while I was unable to fall asleep I was randomly hit by random ideas for blog posts so I wrote down any and all things I thought of on the spot and drafted them on WordPress so I have those for whenever I’m stuck with no ideas! I obviously still need to actually fully write them out and stuff, but at least they are there for me to write on!

And, yeah, that’s so true! Whenever I’m stuck or I don’t know what to post one month, or I want to switch something out, I just look at my ginormous list of blog ideas to help me out or inspire me! It definitely makes the process easier! I also like to do outlines before I write, but that’s a tutorial for another day! 😂

Its hard to believe that you have only been doing this for six months. You are really great at this Mikaela. I like your idea about writing things down, I never do this. I usually get ideas and completely forget them when it comes to writing down posts. I will start doing that. I also liked the planner, wow, you are super organized. I will borrow that idea too. Great Idea for a series, and quite helpful too. I’m trying to keep ahead of schedule for at least a couple of months regarding posting, since I work freelance my job leaves some time to do this (At least for now) I do a lot of the things (particularly brainstorming – you must take advantage when inspiration strikes9 you recommend here and it’s been working so far. I’m looking forward to your advice regarding graphics to prettyfy our blogs.

Yes, definitely! I got an idea for a book tag, didn’t write it down, and then promptly forgot any traces of what my idea was. I still hate myself for not writing it down! 😩
And yeah! I need to edit that one since the app I used updated (UGH). This is the downfall to pre-writing your posts. 😂

This is great! Funnily enough I just sat down to plan as I am on holiday in July/August and where I am going has no wifi so I was going to get some ideas down and schedule some stuff in.

Point 6 is so relatable! I have had several posts that were meant to go up but they go up way later because sometimes things don’t fit with the schedule or you’re planning something else that week or or etc you get the idea.
This is actually my first blog in this kind if scale so I’m still learning how to do things but it helps trying different things and seeing what people seem to enjoy the most!
Any day off work, I can get, I try to use it to write posts (or read whatever book I’m reading haha) because doing it after work is not really how i prefer to write them. I like having time to think about things, time to change things, etc.

Yeah, same! Especially since I learned all the blogging things, like, a well before I started mine! I didn’t even know blogging was a thing this time last year, so it’s very interesting!
Yeah, I usually like to sit for an hour and just write posts. I’ve started this wonderful method of writing two posts at the same time, and I’m already almost done with my July posts! 😄

Great tips for planning blog posts! I hand-write my blog calendars in pencil for quick and easy access to make changes or add things. I tend to cross out days I need to take off, mark down recurring posts, and then fill in the rest with other posts I’d like to post that month. I try to plan my months with enough consistency that I meet these deadline but with the flexibility to ensure I don’t stress or feel overworked. And like you mentioned in #5, I have back up posts or posts I can easily put in when I need more time writing what was originally going to be posted.

Thank you! Ooh, good on you for hand-writing! I originally wanted a blogging journal and planner, but after crossing things out for the 2838292 time, I was like, “Yeah, this is a terrible idea.” 😂 I switch things around so much, it’s unhealthy. Yeah, I try not to stress myself out! I mean, I do write posts much earlier than I should, so I can definitely be flexible and change things all the time.

I feel like my blogging has been a bit all over the place since I started my blog and am spending this month figuring out exactly what type of posts I want to write, how often I want to post them, how I want to start structuring my reviews and try and plan out the next few months posts so this series couldn’t have come at a better time 😄

I’m new at blogging, and I’ve discovered just how time-consuming it is. It takes a dedicated person to create a blog, and to plan ahead and know exactly what to write about (not to mention growing your number of readers; mine come from Twitter at the moment). As a book blogger, it must be especially vital for you to plan ahead. As a writer, I love book bloggers, and I hope that my book will reach your TBR pile soon (once it’s published). Thanks for posting this. Makes me appreciate this platform all the more. 😊

Yes, definitely! I started mine on a whim, and quickly realized how time-consuming it would be after a couple of weeks! I didn’t imagine how much work it would take! 😂 I slightly lessened the load after getting rid of bookstagram, but it’s definitely still a lot of work!
