17 Things That Make Me Want to Run Away From Your Book

File_002 (33)

We all have things that make us want to not pick up someone’s book.

You see a pretty cover, you click on it, you glance over the cover…and you find yourself cringing and pretending you never saw that book in the first place because it has that one thing you just cannot stand. Last week, I talked about the things that make me want to pick up your book, and this time, I’ll be talking about the things make me want to run far, far away from your book.

1. “An infuriatingly attractive boy.” No, no, no. I could read the most awesome premise in the whole world, and if it mentions that the main character has to team up with some boy who’s attractive or some mysterious boy or some boy that she hates (but, obviously, totally won’t), then I’m immediately out.

no 4

2. Anything to do with kings and queens and courts. I love fantasy, but, personally, this is the most boring type of fantasy to me. Anything to do with royalty has just been so overdone that I’ve gotten tired of it. And ten times out of ten, the lost princess is the main female character. Nobody is shocked.

no 5

3. Anything that takes place in the Regency era. This era has been SO overdone. I get it, there were petticoats and stiff language and sexism and Victorian London and pretty dresses and balls. Literally every PNR book that takes place in a different era ALWAYS takes place in the Regency era. I’m so tired of it.

no 6

4. Journey-type books. I immediately get bored if I find out that the entire book is some sort of a road trip or a a straight-up journey from one place to another. There are only so many times a group of people can be attacked, defeat the enemy, things go back to normal, and at the end, SOMEONE betrays them or things aren’t what they seem before I’ve read them all.

no 7

5. Books about finding yourself. Unless there’s some sort of unique concept going along with it (like Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall), these just bore me. I just don’t feel like someone’s character development can stand on its own as a plot.

no 8

6. Pirates. I’m going to blame Treasure Island for being SO TERRIBLE that I can’t stand pirates anymore. They’re just not interesting? At all? But, I still have Black Sails on my to-watch list, so I guess I’m not getting rid of them everywhere.

no 9

7. Anything that takes place over the period of one day. Pretty much all of these books are romances or end up developing into some sort of romance, so I’m going to give a hard pass on these types of books. And I’ll just end up ranting in my head about how unrealistic it is. There have definitely been a couple of stand-outs, but usually because the author is terrific.

no 10

8. Being ship-wrecked. I’m pretty sure I’ve only read one book where the characters are ship-wrecked and I enjoyed it. The rest are just super boring to me or end up being really limiting with what can happen, especially if they’re in the contemporary genre.

no 11

9. “Laugh-out-loud” contemporary. I guess this is because I rarely ever laugh out loud when I read a book. And a humorous contemporary just sounds really boring to me. I like my contemporary novels tragic, thank you very much.

no 12

10. Survival stories. I don’t mind if I read about survival stories in a dystopian or PNR setting or something like that, but when it’s just purely trying to survive, again, really boring. There are only so many times someone can complain about the fact that they can’t find anything to eat before I’m done.

no 13

11. Any mention of pure romance. I rarely like romance as an aside in fantasy, horror, thrillers, PNR, etc., so any mention of it being an erotica or just a plain contemporary romance, I’m out of there. Unless it’s M/M. Then I’ll read it. But otherwise, no.

no 14

12. Sports. I don’t like nor care about sports in real life, so an entire book surrounding the concept of sports is a big nope. Also, this brings up awful flashbacks of straight sports romances. Ugh.

no 15.gif

13. “Seeing the other side.” I guess this could tie in with finding yourself, but I just don’t like romances where one character is on one side, and another character is on another side and realize that they’ve been conditioned to hate each other for no reason. It’s probably the most boring romance trope, in my opinion.

no 16

14. Love triangles. Nope, nope, no, never, no. I actually haven’t read too many books with love triangles in them (I thought the peak of them was back when every book was trying to be the next Twilight), but I have no interest. And nine times out of ten, by the end of the first book, I know who the main character will choose anyway, so there’s zero suspense.

no 17

15. The synopsis is way too pretentious. If I’m intrigued by a title and good reviews, but when I read the synopsis on Goodreads and I’m left confused because it uses the biggest words and the longest sentences to explain a simple premise, I’m out of there. I don’t need to sit through that for 300+ pages.

no 18.gif

16. Anything remotely marketed as “the next The Fault In Our Stars.” This was a trend in contemporary for a while, and though I love The Fault in Our Stars (it’s one of my favorite contemporaries of all time), I’m not in the mood to read its thousands of read-alikes that are basically just trying to make me cry and are overly cheesy and pretentious. Pass.

no 19

17. Any classic retelling that is super boring. If I found out that a book is supposed to be the modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice or something like that, I’m out. No need to read those types of retellings when there are thousands of less boring stories to retell.

  1. I agree with some of these, if there’s some kind of journey involved I am instantly put off! I was encouraged to read a book called ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ and it was so boring because it simply focussed on one man’s journey! 🙂

  2. lol love the GIFs. I have never really thought about most of these but I guess sports, courts, kings and queens would be on my list too. And anything to do with fantasy since that is a genre that I have never touched.

  3. Hahahaha this is actually so funny. Almost everything you mentioned that makes you run away from a book is what I would mention as making me want to pick up a book! Except for TFIOS one, I agree with you there. I guess we just have really different tastes haha.

  4. 😃 I thought I was the only one in THE WHOLE WORLD who hated romance and love triangles! So glad I’m not. Also, this is like a list of the most common cliches, basically 😃 so I have no troubles agreeing to most of this! Although I’m okay with one day long stories and some of the other stuff. But not most of them, just like you 😊

    • No, you’re definitely not alone on love triangles! I think most people don’t like them! Romance, however. Probably! 😂 So many people like contemporary, but that phase came and went when I was in middle school and really liked romance (I’m in high school now, for comparison). Now I’m just like, “I don’t want a relationship” and my interests have radically changed and so has my reading taste. I like darker stuff now (that sounds terrible, though). 😂 I’ve changed a lot over the years. Who knows, maybe when I’m an adult, I’ll love contemporary as much as I used to (probably not, though).

      • Haha, you’re right though! My middle school was so long ago (sigh, I’m almost 29 now) that I feel like I never liked romance! But you’re right – now that I think about it, I totally liked romance in middle school! And then boys started bullying me and I never had a chance xD so I guess I started hating romance? I have had many boyfriends and am living with someone now, so I’m not single, but I still happen to hate romance 😀 some things dig deep! That’s a pretty valid reason to hate it, I guess? XD
…And for some reason this conversation reminded me of how I loved Sailor Moon 😀

      • I think we have the same reason for hating romance then 😂 the discouraging lack of reality in it! Not that me and my boyfriend couldn’t write a book about our story, but just… romance books treat it like it’s super common, happens to everyone and at least 30 times. When in reality, most teens don’t know what to do with their feelings and really have NO lovelife, and experience pressure to have one because of all those stories. And expect it to be perfect as well. Ugh!

    • Haha, it’s not! I think my “Anticipated Releases” posts speak for themselves – that’s like 40+ books that I’m interested in every season! And I have lots of books on my TBR that are sadly left unread. I honestly don’t think it takes me much. 😂

  5. YOU FORGOT UGLY COVER!!! 😂 Hmm… you’ll read m/m pure romance but not f/f? Sorry that was a really random thought I had. 😜 And AGH JOURNEY BOOKS. I hate those. The writing project I’m working on rn has a journey… and I’m like AGDGFHSJKDKFLGLF. I really don’t like epic fantasy for some reason??? All those creatures are weird. (Some exceptions of course.)

    • I don’t really mind an ugly cover! I mean, I still bought and read If I Stay and Before I Fall and those had ugly covers, so it doesn’t matter too much to me (and after I finish a book it just goes on my bookshelf forever lol).

I do love reading adult M/M romance novels, and that’s mainly because I’ve been reading fan fiction of my unrequited gay ships since I was 12, so it’s basically the same thing, except not fanfiction (that probably doesn’t make sense lol). I have read a book with an F/F paring, WHICH I LOVED UGH, but it was a thriller, and usually most F/F are contemporary YA, and I don’t like contemporary. I get bored reading the synopsis (and that’s just most contemporary; it’s not my thing). Which is why I much prefer the fact that there are 3 thriller novels with F/F pairing and a couple of sci-fi/dystopian with F/F pairings in my TBR; those are more my genres. THIS IS TOO LONG OF AN EXPLANATION, but I hope that makes sense???

THEY ARE SO BORING I CANNOT. And me neither. I didn’t like Lord of the Rings at all, and I’m pretty sure that’s epic. It’s just too long, I guess? 😂

      • Ugly covers always put me off… but it doesn’t make me think it’s a bad book??? And oh dear, Before I Fall has an… interesting cover. XD

Ohh, that makes sense! Huh, yeah, a lot of f/f romances are contemporary… SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHANGE THAT.

Oh that reminds me — I also hate long series/books! Harry Potter is an exception but 500+ pages always makes me squint suspiciously. (Except for freaking Illuminae which I just read AGAHAHGAHG.)

        Liked by 1 person

      • I just don’t think I’ve ever been put off! I feel like that’s more something that happened because I got involved with the book community – when I just read books for fun, I didn’t care about the covers. It wasn’t until I had Goodreads and such that I really noticed them! Ugh, yeah, pretty much all of Lauren Oliver’s books just have faces on the cover, except Replica! 😂

I’m glad it’s changing a little! I want more M/M and F/F relationships in other genres anyway since it’s something different and I tend to go for stuff like sci-fi or horror or thriller or fantasy or dystopian or PNR over contemporary a large percent of the time.

Ooh, it depends for me! If it’s not finished, I’ll jump on board, but if it’s done, I usually don’t finish (exception was Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Percy Jackson). Like, I was going to read Vampire Academy series, and I loved the first two books, but I didn’t think I was ever going to read the next five, so I stopped reading them! 😝

    • Ugh, I found The Girl on the Train to be meh, so I’ve never really fallen for those comparisons. I love Gone Girl and everyone’s trying to say the next big thriller is like that book, and it annoys me so much. 🙃 Like, as long as your book has a great premise, I’m there! No need for the comparison game (though I still fall for it, occasionally). 😂

  6. So many of your points are ones that make a book more appealing to me! I guess that’s what they mean when you can’t please everyone – it must be so hard for writers / publishers to decide what to write or publish haha 😀 Have you read any f/f books? Ask the Passengers is pretty good if you’re looking to get into it!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I definitely agree with that! I remember when I was younger and wanted to write and I thought my book was going to be so amazing that no one could hate it (it wasn’t amazing at all, but I was in middle school lol). But, I mean, if Harry Potter has haters, then it’s bound to happen, right? And no; it was one of my plans for this year, and then my reading slump came in and ruined my plans! And most are contemporary, and contemporary is not my thing! It’s why I’m very excited to read 27 Hours and A Line In the Dark (former is sci-fi and latter is thriller). Those are more my genres. 😍

  7. I agree with so many of those!! Especially books that take place over the period of one day. SO UNREALISTIC I PHYSICALLY CAN’T READ ITTTT!😭😭
    Awesome post!

    • I KNOW RIGHT??? I’ve actually read two recently that I really enjoyed, but Adam Silvera and Patrick Ness work wonders with their words, so it felt believable! Most of the time, in supposed to believe that two people met each other that never knew they existed and now their ENTIRE FUTURE hinges on them by the end of the day. Like…no. 😂

      Liked by 1 person

      • I’ll be sure to check those two out, I really need a good book that lasts over the period of one day! One I’ve read recently, The Sun Is Also A Star, I couldn’t cope with! I barely managed to finish the book, unrealistic books make me so mad! I know right? Whyyy?

        Liked by 1 person

      • Ooohh can’t wait until September! I haven’t read any of Adam Silvera’s and Patrick Ness’ books before – these seem good to start with! Same, I read Everything, Everything and it was ok, but not the best book I’ve read!

  8. I hate love triangle to death. Is it too much too ask for a normal relationship with two characters without the additional drama of ‘who should I pick’ that would likely continue through out the book. *I’mlookingatyouYAFantasy

    Liked by 1 person

    • Haha, I usually manage to avoid it! Sometimes, a book concept might be interesting enough, and I’ll give in anyway! I mean, I feel like there are some summaries that don’t have the line, and there’s still insta-love anyway, so it’s not full-proof! And, nope, don’t lien that either! I mean, unless the abs look good. 😂

  9. I actually do enjoy the high fantasy (royalty and knights) and “journey” books. An idea I have for a book to write has both these elements 😂

  10. I agree with a lot of these–especially the “super attractive (but annoying) love interest”. I mean, get a grip. No matter how attractive someone is, if they’re annoying / you hate them / etc. you should just stay away. Looks don’t trump personality. Ever.

    Liked by 1 person

  11. Pretty much whenever they say a book is the next “insert book I hated here” or the next Gone Girl because whenever I’ve picked up something that’s said that it just hasn’t been that good. Also, whenever an author I haven’t liked, blurbs the book, immediately I run away.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I said in another comment that I hate when they compare a thriller to Gone Girl. Usually, the blurb doesn’t even SOUND like Gone Girl. 😂 I don’t think I’ve ever cared about author blurbs! I don’t think I’ve noticed them before unless they’re part of the synopsis.

  12. I LOVE books about pirates and royalty and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of them, no matter how overdone they become, haha. But I do agree with some of the others on the list. I can’t stand reading about sports (I’m not into sports AT ALL so these books are super boring for me) or books that take place over the course of one day. As much as I liked The Sun Is Also a Star, I definitely think I would’ve liked it a lot more if it had taken place over a longer time period.

  13. Oh I actually like love triangles haha. I think the only one we definitely have in common is #12. I don’t like sports much either tbh. Ooh and classic retellings too – I generally avoid classics because they’re not really my taste. Honestly, the number one thing that makes me ditch a book is the author’s writing style. If I don’t like it, I probably won’t finish the book. And this is ofcourse a matter of personal taste and doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with how good a writer the author is.

    • Yeah, I don’t like classics much either. The only reason why I read them is because I’m still in high school, and I’m forced to for school reading. 😂 Ooh, I don’t really mind writing styles! Literally the only writing style I hate is the stilted writing that some classics and epic fantasy novels have; I usually don’t pay attention that much! 😝

  14. I refuse to read straight up romance/erotica novels. I don’t mind if a book has some romance in it if the book is contemporary or fantasy but other than that nope, just nope I won’t read it.

  15. I agree about the journey books. Sometimes I don’t mind them, but I won’t go out of my way to read them either. For me, it’s boats. I don’t even know what the reason is, but I’m instantly bored as soon as characters are stuck on a boat for most of the story.
