[LET’S CHAT] How Do You Find New Blogs to Follow?

File_002 (49).png

A couple months ago, I suggested that the book blogging community might be more clique-y than we think it is.

Of course, I launched the Big Blogger, Little Blogger project, BUT, writing the post also made me realize that I’m terrible at finding new blogs to follow myself, especially since I follow such a low amount. So, I thought I’d go over the methods of how people might find new blogs to follow, and how I find new blogs myself!

So, there’s several ways to find blogs through Twitter! Twitter chats where people leave their links at the end of it, asking for links to blog-hop or to specifically find types of blogs, or even just scrolling through certain hashtags! I know there are lots of people who find blogs through Twitter, but I rarely do. But then again, Twitter just isn’t the place where I hang out often, so that might be why.

I have yet to participate in any Twitter chats (mainly because they look stressful as all hell) or asked for links to blog posts (which I do want to do sometime). I’ve definitely asked for help from other book bloggers via Twitter, and it’s been helpful so far, so I really want to branch out soon!

File_003 (19)

When I was Instagram, I rarely found new blogs to follow. Instagram is one of those places where I feel like it’s really hard to promote your websites or blogs if you’re not already established as a brand, but that might just be me!

I know I did stumble across some blog links from time-to-time, but nine times out of ten, they wouldn’t really be updated consistently or seemed to be completely inactive, so it was really pretty much a lost cause for me! I know there are some people who find a lot of blogs this way, though, so power to you guys!

File_004 (9)

I do use Bloglovin’, and even though it felt pretty useless in the beginning, my account has grown recently over the months, so it is very useful! I know that a lot of blogs that are WordPress, but not necessarily on WordPress.com and Blogger blogs follow me on there, and I keep up with blogs on there, so it’s helpful!

I actually find it really hard to find new blogs on the site, despite it sort of being a place where I’m SUPPOSED to find new blogs. I think that’s mainly because Bloglovin’ tends to push the most popular book bloggers my way, whether it’s checking out the “Film, Music, and Books” category is trending (which is always filled with posts from bloggers with 800+ followers – even if their post only gets one save or one comment) or checking out the “More Blogs Like This” tab (which no matter what book blog you’re at, will always show you the bloggers with 1,000+ followers). So, I never really find new blogs to follow that way.

I will say, I always check out who follows my blog, and that can end up leading me to some lesser-know book blogs, so that’s nice!

File_005 (5)

I feel like I’ve talked a lot about Books Amino on here, but it’s basically an app where you can talk about books and such! I like to think of it as “blogging-lite” and I got started out posting on there before sort of ditching it to start blogging. I do know it’s great for promotion, though, and I’d highly recommend it!

There have been a lot of blogs that I’ve found on the app, and I know there are lots of bloggers who’ve found me on the app! Some of my closest blogging friends and I met through the app, so it’s definitely been a huge help.

File_006 (6)

I know for sure that if a favorite blogger of mine makes a list of favorite bloggers, I’ll be there paying attention and making notes. Even if my favorite bloggers don’t really MAKE a post about it, some bloggers have blog rolls somewhere on their blog that show me who they follow or who their faves are.

It can definitely be a sort of hit or miss – just because that blogger is my favorite doesn’t mean I necessarily will love or be interested in all the blogs they love, and that’s totally fine! But I do know that I’m more likely to check out a blog if it’s recommended to me by someone I trust!

File_007 (3)

I can definitely say this is where I found most of the blogs I follow! I’m that one person who totally stalks the comment section of a post that can be years old and see how many people are still blogging to this day. I know, it’s weird.

There can definitely be pros and cons to this! As I mentioned in that post I linked to earlier, it’s really easy to see the same people to pop up in the same people’s comments sections and can get old quickly. Even I’ve noticed over the last couple of months that there are people I expect to comment on all of my posts and do so – which is great – but it’s so hard to stumble upon new commenters. There are some days where a new person comes along, and that always gets me excited because it shows that my blog is truly growing!

And those are all the ways you can find new book blogs to follow!

My main way of finding new blogs to follow is definitely the comments sections, though I know there are people who are more social media savvy than I am who find blogs that way! It really doesn’t matter how we find the blogs we follow as long as we’re part of the blogging community, right?

  1. Is the master post for your project going to be up any time soon? I am a curious bean.

ANYWAYS, I find most new blogs VIA twitter like when an account follows me (that isn’t some random comapny) it’s usually a book blog so i check them out. I also see interesting posts on Twitter too so there’s that. Mostly it’s comments and blogger recs. Once me and my blogger friend May (forever and everly) did this blogger swap thing where we wrote a list of bloggers we loved(there were like at least 20 blogs) and we both wrote a list and gave it to each other — i found some amazing blogs that way.

    • Yes; I moved it to August because I already had all my posts planned out for July and couldn’t fit it in, and August had an open spot! 😄

Yeah, I’ll usually check out people’s profiles as well if they’re legit people that follow me! 😂 Oh, that sounds like a good idea; that’d definitely be a good way to find new blogs if we don’t list the same ones! 🙈

  2. Books amino? Never heard about it! I’ll have to check it out. But there are so many platforms… I also really like Litsy, have you checked it out? Also, there’s Riffle books that I have signed up for, but haven’t checked out yet. Litsy is very blogger-heavy though, it’s like almost everyone there blogs? So you could check that out too.
Also, if you go to my profile on Twitter, my pinned tweet is this massive blog hop that got me hundreds of blogs to follow! So if you want, you can check that out too.
And comment sections, yes! I love doing that too 🙂

    • Yeah, I saw you followed me, so I shall check it out! 😄 I have tried it out twice, but I’ve never liked it! I don’t know why, it’s just something that I think I’ll start, but then I’ll quit a couple hours later. 😂

I saw that going around in my feed! I should check out more book blogger links threads; I’m always lazy to check them out when I see them!

Comment sections are where I found most of my blogs, I think, especially when I started out! 😄

      • Yeah! I created it, BUT I still have no idea what’s going on there and how to start 😃 so I’ve decided to lurk a little, start slow and figure it out that way. I’m more of a Goodreads person I guess, so new social networks for books always take a while.

  3. I’m not on Instagram or Bloglovin’ so I usually find people who leave a comment as well, and via Twitter.. either they liked or retweeted or I saw one of my blog friends share a post from someone who looks interesting.. like how I saw this post. Thanks Chelsea ;-).

  4. Finding blogs through Instagram is the HARDEST. I can usually find some when they post a picture on their story saying “new post on the blog”, etc. but that’s about it. I really wish Instagram was a better place to promote your blog though because it’s the only social media I really use and I’m terrible at promoting it otherwise.
I’ve never heard of Books Amino though. It sounds interesting.
But for sure, I find most blogs through comments sections, and also through meme link ups. I will usually click on a few Top Ten Tuesday posts linked up or go through comments on people’s posts and go to some of those blogs.
    Great post!

    • Oh that’s interesting to know! I assumed that people who had 1,000+ followers on Bookstagram had an easier time promoting their blog! I only had 200 something followers, and promo sucked. 😂 I do wish Instagram was better at promotion! I was so annoyed when I found out it didn’t include links in the caption. Like, what???

Books Amino is interesting! I found out about it via Booktube last year and I’ve been using it ever since.

Yeah, I definitely find people through comment sections! I don’t do memes, but I have participated in a couple of link-ups! 😄

      Thank you! 😘

  5. I always find new stuff through Twitter but I have cultivated a list that is exclusively authors and bloggers. This has created a wonderful network of likeminded people and my feed is all about books. It took me a year to do this. Also building relationships with people on WordPress has helped a ton. Sometimes I just do random searches and stumble on great blogs. It’s hard to branch out from WordPress but Twitter and Bloglovin has helped with that.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, I have seen people make lists on Twitter and have been included in some (the first time it happened, I was like, “What the heck is this?” 😂). Yeah, definitely becoming friends with people gets you to meet other people and so on! When you meet one blogger, you end up meeting a lot of them since most bloggers have close blogging friends! Yeah, it is hard to branch out from WordPress, but Bloglovin’ has definitely helped with that! 😄

  6. I have to confess it’s mostly blogs who have followed me but the weekly memes like WWW Wednesday or Top Ten Tuesday are good places to meet other bloggers. Also sometimes just scrolling through the books tag on WordPress reader can be a good place to find new blogs.

    Liked by 2 people

    • Oh, yeah, totally forgot to mention that! I don’t do memes, so I’ve never gone through their link-ups, but they definitely do work! A couple of people found me when I linked up my blog when I first started out a while back! 😄 I need to start scrolling through tags! So many people have mentioned doing that! 😂

  7. OMG you have a Books Amino? I do too! I thought I was the only blogger that had one because I don’t see anyone talk about it. My Amino handle is Bibliomanic Bookworm. I’ll look you up on there, assuming you have the same handle as your blog! 🙂 I have just recently found your blog last month and have been quietly stalking you (Not in a weird way lol, I just love all of your posts so much!). If you are looking for more smaller blogs I would be super happy if you would go take a look at mine! Shamelessly self promoting, but I would appreciate any feed back on what I can do to become better! I just want to say that I really look up to you and your blog ❤

    • Yes, I do! I’ve met some of my blogging friends through Books Amino once I found it they had a blog after following them for so long on the app! I will check you out; I checked my Books Amino notifications before I checked these, so I cleared my notifs without even checking! 🙈

Aw, thank you so much; this comment warms my heart! ❤ I will definitely check your blog out sometime soon; hopefully Blogspot will not reject my comments if I leave them! 😂

  8. I find most of my blogs through Twitter! Twitter chats are a lot but they can be very fun! I tend to just pop my head in and don’t always stay for the whole thing. But other times I get in lots of conversations and don’t want to leave bc I’m having fun!
I used to use Instagram but don’t really go on there anymore… I really don’t have time to be attempting to set up beautiful pictures that don’t come out great anyway… I much prefer Twitter now

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yeah, I feel like if I did do a chat, I wouldn’t be there for the whole thing! Socializing, whether online or in real life, can drain me, so I know I wouldn’t have the patience to go for the whole thing! 😂

Yeah, I love the Instagram community and looking at pretty pictures, but I stopped because it stressed me out too much. 😅

  9. I usually use the comments section because a lot of times the people who post comments have the most active blogs. I like Twitter, too. I don’t know if the blogger community is cliquish, but I personally like to stay with WP blogs since they show up in my reader and make it much easier to keep pace with new posts. Great suggestions!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yeah, someone else commented about that, and it’s true! It is interesting to look at old discussion posts and see what blogs still exist though; I do it all the time! 😂 That whole discussion post was more about bloggers visiting and commenting on the same blogs and less about which blog platform you use! I usually follow blogs that aren’t exactly on WordPress via Bloglovin’, since all blogs are acceptable on there! 😄

  10. I’m definitely a comment stalker, if I notice a blog url that I’ve seen before in comment sections I will usually check them out. I also tend to find new blogs by checking out the people tagged in awards, I mean they were tagged for a reason!

    Liked by 2 people

  11. I mainly use the comment section to find new blogs or click to the person’s profile. Sometimes I just search for the tags in the search bar of WordPress, that usually brings me to new bloggers.

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yeah, I definitely tend to find new blogs via comment sections, especially if their blog name is interesting! I’ve never searched the tags before, but I do try to cater my tags! I don’t know if anyone has found me through my tags, so that’d be interesting!

      Like

      • Yeah, idk how to do it on the app but if you do it on the laptop…. basically when you go on reader and you click on Tag(which is the last option in the bar), you can type in the tag you want to look for and then press add. You can delete the tag afterwards if you no longer want search for that tag.

  12. I’ve never heard of Book Amino, but it sounds pretty cool! I have found other book blogs through Google, Facebook groups for book bloggers, and Bloglovin’. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all of the book blogs out here. There are so many book blogs!!!!! 😮

    Liked by 1 person

  13. I also find a lot of the blogs I follow through comment sections. It’s just easiest to find people who are still actively blogging and who say interesting things that way. I agree that other places may lead to dead links and inactive blogs. I also like when blogs I already follow recommend blogs.

    Liked by 1 person

    • That’s very true! It’s definitely easier to know that people are still blogging if they comment frequently, same if someone’s constantly tweeting; I usually assume that they blog often! Most of the time, if someone on Instagram had a book blog, it’d either be totally dead or they only posted every few months, which I hate. 😂 Yeah, when a blogger recommends a blog, I’ll definitely check it out!

  14. I honestly don’t know how I found new blogs to follow??? 😂 I guess when someone new comments on my blog, I check out their blog as well. (I also agree that it makes me really excited to see new comments on my blog because I’M GROWING!!!) I also like to check out blogs in the comments section, too, as well as bloggers in shout-outs. And sometimes it’s not the best, but I do use Goodreads to see if any users there have blogs (though a lot of times it’s usually just a review blog haha). Great post! ❤

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, I get so excited when I see new commenters! Like, hello new people! 😂 Comment sections are probably where I found most of the blogs I follow, and shout-outs are included as well! I know there are groups dedicated to book blogs on Goodreads, but I find it so weird how I never noticed any blogs when I was on Goodreads for years. Like, I check in and look every once in a while, and so many popular Goodreads users had blogs or people who I was following, and I just never knew until now??? 😂 Thank you!

  15. I more or less find new blogs via twitter! I’ve been added to a few lists over the years and every now and then I go through to see who else is in the list with me, check them out and check out their blogs and if I like them, follow them, etc. Also the twitter chats and a few shout outs have seen me following some new and awesome blogs lately! 🙂

As a PR I’ve also used google before now, you can search YA book blogs and lists come up, etc. Also interesting to have a little look.

There’s also Goodreads and Goodreads groups too!

Lastly you can also use Facebook! There are a fair few groups out there for book bloggers and I’ve met some fantastic people in some of the groups I’m in.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, I’m added on lists as well! I’ve never bothered to check them out, though! 😂 Yeah, shout-outs are definitely a good way to find blogs as well!

I’ve never googled blogs before (unless I already know the blog and I’m just trying to find their URL)! I usually use Google if I’m trying to find something specific relating to blogging, and then I’ll probably find some blogs that way!

I would’ve totally been in a Goodreads group, but I quit Goodreads way before I started blogging, and didn’t want to come back. And I’ve never had Facebook, even in its prime, so I didn’t want to start now. 😂 I’m fine with the two social media accounts I have!

  16. This is such an interesting post, Mikaela! 😀

I will usually check comment sections too, I feel like they are the easiest way to find people who might enjoy the same kind of books as me which is always something I look forward to! Twitter can be a great way to find new blogs too! I love leaving my link whenever someone asks for them and checking out lots of new blogs that way too! But I also really love Twitter and spend quite a bit of time on there, so I feel like that helps too!

    • Thank you! 😄

Yeah, definitely! I’ve always loved looking through comment sections, seeing people’s opinions, especially on discussions! I can easily blog hop that way if some of the blogs interest me! Ooh, yes, I like doing that if I come across tweets like that sometimes! It depends if I’m in the mood to give out my link, though. 😂

  17. I actually find the majority of my new blogs via awards posts… often it’s ones I’m tagged in as well! I’m nosy so I’ll look at who else is nominated along side me! 😂 That and other blogs comment sections… again cause I’m nosy!! 😀

  18. Hi! Great post, really interesting!
I tend to do the same and look at other people commenting on blog posts that i find interesting and work on the basis that we must have a common interest?
I also go on the wordpress reader and type in a tag that i am particularly interested in or that i am currently working on to see if there is any post i could link up to!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you so much! 😄

Yeah, that definitely makes sense! I mostly follow book blogs, so most people who comment are other book bloggers, so I know it’s easy to find people in that department!

Ooh, I’ve never done that before! I’m glad someone told me that existed months ago because I was totally using tags incorrectly. I wonder if anyone finds me through them? 😂

  20. Great post! They’re all good ideas for finding new blogs – I suck at that too. I found MOST of the ones I read in the beginning from weekly memes. Now I would say either Twitter chats (which I’ve only participated in like 4 times) and comment sections of blogs. Those are the easiest because you can just scroll through a post you’re ALREADY commenting on and find new ones 😀

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yeah, we can both suck at finding blogs! 😂 Yeah, I’ve never been in a Twitter chat before, just because they look stressful! And, I love stalking comments sections! Sometimes I find the same ones over and over again if the same people are commenting on everyone’s blogs, but I sometimes find new faces! 😄

  21. I always find new blogs to follow through bloglovin where I’ll follow a few book blogs I know from twitter and I’ll look through who they are following and follow them. I also find new blogs through people commenting on my blog or sometimes on Twitter however I feel most social media is useless for following blogs but great for getting to know other bloggers! Thanks for this lovely discussion Mikaela!

  22. Blog recs sounds good to me too. Initially, when I didn’t have much followers I checked Nominees in book tags. I got real good bloggers through it and also they are consistent. I still do the same. I check likes and comments of the ‘posts I liked’ that way I can check out new and old bloggers too. And sometimes check WordPress recommendations.

  23. Haha you pretty much named all the ways I find new bloggers to follow! I stalk comment sections all the time, and if a favorite blogger is mentioning their blogger friends I am up front and center clicking all the links. Of course, not all of them click with me, and that’s fine, but I usually find at least a couple I can relate with! Instagram is a tricky one! I have been a part of the bookstagram community for a little while now and there are quite a few blogs that are active on there, it’s just that you’ve got to sift them out from the people who are mainly active on Instagram.
And Twitter just scares me honestly hahaha it’s so intimidating! And I always feel so lost there!

    Liked by 1 person

    • I was on bookstagram for probably three months or so, and I just could barely find blogs (or if I did, they rarely uploaded!). I mean, I feel like Instagram sucks promo-wise anyway; I got such little promo from it even with how long I was on it! 😝

Twitter is scary! I don’t hang around there much; it’s not my preferred social media! I know some people love it there, though.

      Liked by 1 person

      • But bookstagram is so great! I have met so many real friends there, I never thought that would be possible! It definitely takes time though!

I am on Twitter sporadically haha and then I hide from it for another 6 months. We all have our preferences!

  24. I have such a hard time finding new blogs to follow. Twitter is kind of a lost cause for me; I pretty much only use it to stalk authors and other bloggers because I am too afraid to actually talk to anyone xD. I do find probably 99% of the blogs I follow from comments, both on my own posts and others’. I like that because there’s a quick link to their blog, and it’s even better when they use commentluv!
    Wonderful post!!

  25. Yesss I agree. I found like 0 new blogs over the past month, probably because I’m too picky with the blogs I follow haha. I recently when on an unfollowing spree and I’m only following like 30 blogs right now!

I LOVE bookish Twitter, but it doesn’t really help me to find new blogs because a lot of the bloggers whose accounts I like I don’t like their blogs/posts, so I just follow them on Twitter but not their blog.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hey, we’re twinning! I only follow around thirty as well! I’m the same way as you – I’m super picky with the blogs I follow, and I unfollow often. 😂 And I also really hate having a crowded feed. I don’t know why; I just never have!

That definitely makes sense! I also follow a couple of people who have blogs, but I don’t like their blogs or people who are just bookworms and don’t have blogs at all (but, they have pretty pictures)! I do the same with following some blogs just on here and never following them on social media. I’m all over the place. 😂

  28. I totally use the comments sections of other book blogs to find other book bloggers! I find it so hard to find book bloggers otherwise. Sometimes I ask for people to sent me their fav book bloggers twitter handles, just so I can find new book bloggers, sometimes it works, other times no one responds to the tweet haha.

I also tag on the end of other people asking for book blogger links and then check out all the links sent to that thread. That seems to work too.

Bloglovin is an easy way for me to follow blogs, but I don’t usually find new book blogs on their. They definitely tend to push the big blogs towards you so you never actually get to see the smaller blogs, it’s annoying.

Stalking other book blogs comments section is the way to go I think!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Haha, that’s true! Some of my tweets are popular and some of them aren’t; I’m always so confused as to what I’m doing that makes people to like my Tweets in the first place. 😂 I think threads where people leave their blog links is probably the most effective way to find blogs on Twitter!

Yeah, that’s one of the things that bothers me most about Bloglovin’! I didn’t get past less than 20 followers until a couple of big bloggers followed me, and it’s been going steady for months now! But, otherwise, I would have probably been stuck on 16.
